Nomads chase fizzles out amidst Run Out chaos
With the sun blasting down on Old Deer Park, Richmond won the toss and elected to bat. Openers Hugo Knowles (18) and Hamza Sajawal (27) used the opportunity to come out swinging. Jaz Naeem soon drew Knowles into hitting a skier to mid-on, and Joe Ridley nicked off Sajawal, but nevertheless boundaries came quickly and Richmond were 75/2 after 10 overs.
Pacey debutant Abrar Malik and Blackheath spinner Hassan Khokhar applied the brakes, and were rewarded with a couple of prime scalps, both miscuing into the leg-side to offer straightforward catches.
The Richmond #5, Eric Botha, looked a good bat, hooking Malik for an enormous six into the clubhouse windows. A cagey contest ensued as Nomads tried to give him a single to expose the left-handed Cole to the off-spinners. Just before lunch, this ploy paid off, with Cole held at slip off Jason Bilimoria. Richmond were 141/5 at the interval.
After a tasty lunch, the economical Vishal Trivedi (11-0-35-2) seemed to put Nomads on top with a double-strike in one over, cleaning up Zahid and Zotov in the space of 4 balls.
But that man Botha was still there, anchoring the innings and playing a selection of fine strokes to keep the scoreboard moving, including a couple of excellent reverse sweeps, until one reverse too many proved his downfall, pinned LBW by Khokhar (13–1–42–2).
Nomads might have hoped to finish the innings quickly, but the 9th wicket put on 42 unbeaten to take Richmond to the declaration at 240 from 50 overs.
On the chase, Vic and Tom made a decent but unspectacular start, with a 50 partnership in 14 overs before Brockton (20) top-edged Knowles to give a simple catch. Narzm Mohammed (26) played the spinners well, and saw Kandampully to his fifty. It was a real surprise when, just before the start of the last 20, Narzm was yorked by Knowles with the score on 109.
Nomads therefore needed 132 from the last 20.4 overs, and Jason Bilimoria hurried the score along with lovely strokes and urgent running between the wickets. At 155/2 with 14 overs left – Nomads looked in a strong position to complete a big chase.
Sadly, this was the point at which Bilimoria (25) and Kandampully (84) were dismissed in quick succession by Cole, both edging the left-arm spinner behind the wicket.
The next men in found it hard to start against two left-arm spinners on a turning track, and the chase rather fizzled out. With 60 needed from the last 7 overs, but 6 wickets in hand, a result seemed like an improbable outcome.
31 balls of madness later, Nomads had contrived to lose! Some bizarre cricket included three run-outs which ran the full range from unfortunate to grossly negligent, and the last man being brilliantly caught at slip, for a golden duck, from an entirely misconceived slog.
Nomads repaired to the Richmond bar to lick their wounds over a few restorative beverages. Umpire Nick Stevenson was in fine form and proffering ice-cold Sancerre to accompany the President’s anecdotes, while his protégé Fiona Leighton arrived in time for a pint of cider. Nomads lingered on the terrace until closing time on a warm and pleasant evening.
Nomads were supported throughout the day by Arvin Joshi, over lunch by Alastair Evans-Gordon, in the afternoon by Teresa Smith and in the evening by Aussie Umpire Fiona Leighton.
