Oliver Brunt Fifer secures Nomads win
This was Nomads first visit to the quintessential village cricket club that is Penn Street CC, two grounds and both men and women’s teams with much administrative energy.
Nomads batted first and set off at pace reaching 100 runs in the tenth over. Sanjay hit a dashing 51 off 32 balls and Jeremy 45 off 43. At 113 Sanjay was adjudged lbw and at 138 Jeremy was caught. Dillan Shah enjoyed a merry 26 whereupon Nomads suffered a mini collapse, four wickets falling for 25 runs, 6-168. Oliver Brunt and Simon Murugathasan restored order with a stand of 47 before Oliver was out lbw for 35 to teenage Highams. Young Josh Highams was to have a great day dismissing six Nomads batsmen. Nomads celebrated tail of Fernando, Joshi and Fielding hung around but contributed little apart from a Joshi four. The innings closed short of 40 overs at the respectable total of 239. Young Josh had taken 6-18 and Penn Street were mighty relieved to have restricted Nomads to 239 after that 10 over blast at the start.
Oliver Brunt opened the bowling and had his first two balls struck for mighty boundaries. With his third ball he knocked back the middle stump of Charlie Tollerfield. Within four overs Oliver had bowled out three and Simon had Adrian White caught by Dillan Shah,4-19., Number five Steve Steve dug in and reached 46 before being caught by Sanjay in the deep off Paul Fielding. Oliver completed a fifer and Paul and Sunny took two each to finish off the innings. Young Josh faced 33 balls before giving Shah another catch this time off Paul Fielding. Penn Street were all out for 131 off 25.4 overs.
Both teams beat a hasty retreat to the Squirrel Pub some via a shower. Debutant Oliver bought a jug for his fifer and the mother of young Josh bought another jug both gratefully received by the player of both teams . Being a beautiful evening at an idylic setting Nomads officials, Umpire, Scorer and Captain dined to complete an excellent day.
For Umpire Nick Stevenson this was a welcome return to a ground where he and his father had played for the Hill CC decades ago and was recognised by Penn Street Umpire Robert Fryer.
