Philanderers win by 5 wickets

Nomads returned to Fenners for the first time since  2006 on a very hot day indeed.

This was scheduled as all day game and despite of the University draconian restrictions our hosts Philanderers had gone to a great deal of trouble to secure outside catering for lunch and tea.

It was therefore somewhat of a surprise when the skipper of the day Bill Johnson informed his team that they were playing a 40/40 limited over match with the one modification that the side batting second had to be bowled all out to lose the match. A draw was a possibility.

Bill lost the toss and so Nomads were invited to bat first. Tom Brockton and Chetan Malhotra added 54 for the 1st wicket against some swift but wayward seam bowling. Indeed Philanderers were to bowl 19 wides and two no balls. Victor Kandampully joined Brockers and these two added a further 89 before the introduction of fifth bowler Karston saw to Vic’s dismissal at 133. Brocton raised his tempo but Jason Bilimoria found it difficult to pierce the youthful and defensive set field. Karston was to claim Brockton for a hard fought 91 and then shortly after Bilimoria leaving Nomads 185-3.

This should have been a decent basis for a late assault but in fact wickets tumbled. Nomads lost 6 wickets for a mere 35 runs including two run outs, all out in the 38th over. This was clearly 40 or more runs short on a Fenners track.

A couple of players were surprised to open a luncheon box and find a mountain of sandwiches but then these were for tea. The rest of the excellent boxes contained a most agreeable lunch.

After the interval Jason Caunt struck early but then Ragnautun and Leary put on 169 for the second wicket not without some luck and benefiting from two expensive overs from old man Page. Will Noble removed Leary on 83 and a returning Caunt removed Gill cheaply,184-3.

Will Noble removed Ragnautun on 100 but suffered some punishment and Jason Bilimoria had the free hitting Hyde caught by Bill Johnson, 219-5. All too late as Philanders soon reached their target in the 38th over.

Had some chances off Sajjad’s opening spell been held there may have been a different result!

A magnificent mustachioed elderly gentlemen who joined the scorers for most of the game, Chris Dean, had played with ‘Granny’ Alston and one of the Philanderers turned out to be the Grandson of former Nomads skipper Wilfred Picton-Turbervill.Two interesting connections with Nomads cricket of yesteryear.

Nomads drank late into the evening at a local inn which was fine as most were staying overnight.

This proved to be a most enjoyable day in Cambridge despite the result and next year we will play a game on Monday giving the overnight stay more ‘meaning and context’ as ICC would say!
