Cricket returns with a win at the Rectory Field N
Alliance skipper Sajjad Shawl won the toss and chose to bowl in a 40 over match, taking the new ball himself. Openers Vic Kandampully and Chetan Malhotra started watchfully but ran between the wickets to good effect until Malhotra was castled by Shawl for 17. Young gun Tanmay Thanawalla started brightly but was surprisingly run out in a calling mix-up, and when Javed snuck a straight one past Kandampully (31), Nomads had slipped to 62/3.
Happily, John Olufawo and Huzefa Sajawal combined to good effect in a bruising partnership of 58, with Olafawo (32) leading the way with his trademark drives, and Sajawal (44) hitting a couple of enormous sixes before being outfoxed by (occasional Nomad) Adnan Kapadia.
Modest contributions from the wicket keepers union left Nomads in the awkward position of 178/7, but James Hamilton (16) and Hamza Sajawal (34*) played a fine hand, with some superb ball-striking from Hamza in particular. This took Nomads to 227/9, a substantial total on a large ground with a lush outfield.
After a short break for ‘packed teas’, Hamilton and Hamza Sajawal took the new ball. Hamza immediately trapped Alam LBW; not to be outdone, Hamilton ripped through Iftikhar’s defences to remove his off stump for a duck. It felt like a chance was being created every over, and the Sajawals combined to remove Ansari, caught at mid-off.
Beddington 1st XI spinner Ben Butcher created significant difficulties for Alliance throughout, and immediately trapped young Malhotra in front of all three for a well-made 24. A shame, as he was probably the pick of the Alliance batsmen, but not the first to have his pads rapped by Butch!
From 50/4, the match appeared safe, with new batsmen in, and the experienced Andy Marshall marking his run-up. Butcher (4/8) ran through the middle-order, including the prize scalp of Sajjad himself, and was cruelly removed from the attack before having an opportunity to complete his five-fer.
Some lusty hitting from the lower order prolonged the game, but Thanawalla (2/38) and Andy Marshall (1/12) put an end to proceedings, much to the vocal frustration of Kyle Bradley, who had just accepted an invitation to bowl the next over when the final wicket fell! A comprehensive victory by 112 runs.
Nomads formed a socially distanced circle around the bottle bar while enjoying the early evening sunshine. We were grateful to Nick Stevenson for umpiring throughout, and to Mark Williams for scoring. Interested spectators included the President, Caroline Hamilton, and Kyle’s girlfriend Laura as well as Blackheath chairman, Richard Ward.
