Nomads chase loses momentum so draw
On a beautiful morning Vic won the toss and invited Wykehamists to bat. There had been a flurry of late selection activity due to drop outs and Vic was uncertain as to his revised team’s batting strength. One of the replacements was Big Frank Stuckey returning after twent years absence.
After a bright start Wykehamists slumped to 127-5 with Neil Karnik taking three wickets and Vishal two. Somewhat lame Freddie Blackett(53) revived the Wykehamists innings before falling to Jack Ellis by way of a A catch by Gudaraes. The tail wagged taking the score to 233 – 8 before declaring.
In reply Nomads lost numbers 2 and 3 very early. However skipper Vic and tall Jack seemed in command adding 51 before a most unfortunate run out occurred removing Nomads best bat for 26. Shrtly aftrward Vic was out. Big Frank now joined Dhruv Tahil and these two added 29 which may have been 49 if Frank could have run! Neil Karnik joined Dhruv and immediately attacked the bowling with success such that the target seemed feasible. At the start of the twenty overs Nomads required 124 runs to win but curiously scored only 2 runs from the fist four overs. Nomads did score 80 runs from the next 16 with Neil Karnik scoring 50 and Dhruv Tahil 47 ending 30 runs short. Euan Evans bowled a tidy spell at the death 6-1-14-2.
Wykehamist weary after several days cricket and a very late night celebrating American Independence were wary of their chances against Nomads. Likewise Nomads skipper Vic after selection difficulties was none too confident so both sides felt satisfied with the draw.
Wykehamists and Nomads repaired to the nearby Queen’s Head Pub for some libations and were all most disappointed to find they were at a pub which closed the bar at 8pm. Even worse was the closure of the M3 making the journey home longer than desired.! Notwithstanding these late set backs this was a very good day’s cricket with very hospitable hosts.
Nomads and Wykehamists have drawn for three years now so next year will be interesting as both sides strive for that elusive result.
