Hemel hang on to draw

Henry VIII visited Hemel Hempstead some 500 years ago but this was Nomads first visit to Hemel Hempsted Town CC with its substantial Clubhouse. There was also a Cafe open when we arrived but closed once play began whereupon the bar opened which did not sell food. All of which was odd for a club not providing Tea.

Nomads won the Toss and elected to bat. Jono Vernon-Powell and debutant Shavani Mehta opened and struggled somewhat with the soft pitch and occasional low bounce. Shavani played some good shots but was first to fall feeling for one well outside off stump.Dhruv Tahil came and went quickly,2-48 off13.5 overs. James hit a six but was then bowled by Tyler James.,3-73 off 22.3 overs.Jonathan Croft was looking confident when he was brilliantly caught off a mighty stroke,4-107,32.3. Theo Wetherall enterd and trasformed the momentum of the Nomads innings hitting 6 fours and 6 sixes. Jono V-P fell for a solid 64,5-157,off 37.4. Jazib joined Theo and these two maintained the run rate of 10 per over savaging some of the later Hemel bowlers. As a result Nomads declared at 219-5 off 44 overs which meant there should be 44 overs to bowl Hemel out.

Hemel skipper Freddie Lowe opened with youngster Henry Morgan. While he attacked particularly Jazib who took time to find a good length young Henry blocked. It was that enigma veteran Arvind Joshi who broke partnership trapping Lowe caught Wetherall at deep mid on. Fazad Ahmed then bowled the obdurate Henry Morgan. Shavani Mehta replaced Arvind removed Maxwell Clark by way of a Hamilton catch. Shavani bowled an excellent spell of off spin recording 4-27 off 12 overs. At the other end Fayaz bowled Auzir Ali,4-85 off 23.4 overs. Andy Penn replaced Fayaz and bowled Finley Clark,6-102, off 27.4 overs. The ninth pair dropped anchor for nine overs before James then returned replacing Andy and removed number 10, 9-126 off 39.6 overs. This produced an intense final four overs as James and Shavani strove to take the final wicket with many close fielders. However Hemel’s 10th pair survived to draw the match. James finished with very tidy figures of 1-11 off 9 overs.

We had three debutants in this match and one making his debut in UK! Unfortunately Shavani is returning to Australia but promises to return. We hope to see more this season of the other debutants.

This was an enjoyable afternoon’s cricket played in the good spirit. Nomads had three debutants and Hemel were an unknown quantity so all credit to Andy Penn’s Man Management and Skippering of the side.
