Maiden ton for debutant Ishkaar Ujoodia in massive Nomads win
Nomads ‘Ancient and New’ at Blackheath CC Matches,Scorecards Reports 2021Both the absence of a Gaieties team and an apocalyptic weather forecast threatened Nomads’ prospects of play at Rectory Field, Blackheath.
However, the match manager was able to source an opposition from the conference – Rosslyn CC, from Hertford – and, despite a couple of showers, the eventual deluge held off long enough to allow a full game to be played.
Our well-travelled opponents were extremely keen to play a 40 over game, so Brockton chose to bat on winning the toss. Thierry Pascal and debutant Ishkaar Ujoodia got Nomads off to a decent start before Thierry was yorked. Chetan Malhotra, with wife and newborn in attendance, made a lively 21 before being cleaned up by a quicker ball from Rosslyn’s resident ‘pie-chucker’. The umpires conferred and that was the last from that particular ‘bowler’. Sajjad Shawl’s good form this season failed to extend to this game, and at 69/3 from 13, Nomads were in a spot of bother.
Happily, the Blackheath CC partnership of Ishkaar Ujoodia (119) and Calvin Mills (75*) played a fine hand, to see Blackheath through to drinks at 104/3, and then accelerate against the change bowling. The pair ran extremely well between the wickets and needed no encouragement to put the bad ball away for four.
Mills reached his fifty in the 33rd over, and Ujoodia’s hundred followed shortly after, with another controlled single off the opposition skipper. This was the signal for caution to be thrown to the wind, as 70 was added in the last 6 overs. The loss of Ujoodia for an excellent 119 offered Rosslyn no relief, as Sadik Ahmed contributed 27* from only 9 balls, including hitting the last ball of the innings for a big six. A daunting total of 293/4 awaited Rosslyn after a fine tea – several Nomads suggested they might have been 40 runs better off playing a declaration game!
With the ball, Sajjad Shawl struck early…with a run-out from short fine-leg! Sumant Bahl bowled too straight for the Rosslyn middle-order – as two bowleds and an LBW will attest. With 4 men back in the hutch for under 40, Pagey was brought on ‘with a newer ball’ for a long spell.
Andy Marshall took the opportunity to get among the wickets – he benefited from the sure catching of Pascal and Mishra, but was less amused by Tom Brockton tripping over his own feet under a catch at mid-off. Nevertheless, Pagey and Mishra tidied up the tail, and Rosslyn were 124 all out.
Perhaps not the day we had hoped for, but very pleasing to get a game in the circumstances.
Nomads’ win had been keenly observed by various spectators including Ajay and Seema Ujoodia, match manager Vic Kandampully, Club President Michael Blumberg, , and Nomads’ newest, youngest member, Vir Malhotra (with proud mum Trisha)
Nomads made for the Blackheath bar – where the beer tasted all the better as Nomads watched the rain arrive in earnest - a few minutes after the conclusion of the game
