Tim Schneider ton not enough for Nomads win by 4 wickets

On a brilliantly sunny day at Blackheath CC, shortly before 1pm, Nomads reached 11-0.

That is to say, eleven Nomads at the ground, and zero Gaieties. On finding that the Gaieties were labouring under a misapprehension that the start time was 2pm, Nomads took the time to indulge in a relaxing pre-match pint. But this failed to cool down Chris Page, who offered some trenchant opinions on the situation to the first Gaieties arrivals.

Eventually we were able to start. Vic won the toss, and chose to attack a Gaieties batting line-up which, it was felt, might still be ‘on the bus’. This proved to be the case as C Tarek had an early brain fade and was clean bowled by debutant Calem Brown. In an impressive opening spell, Calem followed up by disturbing the timbers again with a sharp Yorker. Not to be outdone, Sajjad Shawl produced a crackerjack which seamed sharply back in to pluck James Schneider’s off stump from the ground as the unfortunate Gaiety shouldered arms. At 28/3, Gaieties looked to rebuild, but the nascent partnership was ended by Sajjad castling Bulteel for 19.

Chris Page was introduced (with a Newer Ball!) but failed to find his length and was repeatedly swatted through backward square as Tim Schneider and Sen compiled a breezy stand of 62 for the fifth wicket, until Andy Marshall finally managed to rip one through Sen’s defences before trapping Bulmer plumb in front for a duck. One so rarely sees a batsman walk for an LBW, but we believe this to be one such occasion! With further wickets for Marshall and Arora, Gaieties were 128/8.

However, opening bat Tim Schneider took full advantage of the return of Chris Page, manipulating the strike and making it hard for Nomads to attack the tail-enders. The reintroduction of Calem Brown broke the 9th wicket stand of 44, but Schneider remained, and was eventually dismissed for 122, caught on the boundary off Arora in the 48th over, to end the Gaieties innings for 205.

After a sumptuous spread, Brockton and Kandampully opened up for Nomads; biding their time against the pacy outswing of Kelleher but taking full toll of the luckless Petrides to reach the fifty stand in the 10th over. Kelleher made the breakthrough by yorking Kandampully for 39, but this only brought Blackheath all-rounder Sadik Ahmed to the crease.

Sadik took command of the partnership and was soon outscoring the experienced Nomads club captain as he took the attack to the Gaieties change bowlers with solid stroke-making, good timing, and an accomplished reverse sweep which thoroughly demoralised the Gaieties spinners. The loss of Brockton for a battling 24 was hardly noticed as in-form Kiwi Ross Ormiston guided the young debutant to his maiden Nomads fifty.

The removal of Sadik for a classy 59 hardly slowed the Nomads juggernaut as Ash Arora and Bill Rouse helped Ormiston to keep the scoreboard rattling, and the end was only hastened when Calem Brown came to the wicket. Despite a direct hit run-out depriving Ross (33) of another well deserved red-inker, Calem’s swift 22* took Nomads across the line to win by 4 wickets.

High Class!” said Tom Brockton though some Gaieties were unimpressed with his demeanour at the crease!

A third consecutive win in the July incarnation of the Gaieties fixture was celebrated by Nomads in style, with jugs of lager and ale on the pavilion veranda.

Michael Blumberg enjoyed a day in the sun umpiring. Blackheath CC were, however, admonished for failure to provide a white coat. Meanwhile, Ben Butcher had been an interested spectator in the post-tea session, together with his girlfriend Lauren: thus far, a ‘less interested’ spectator.
