Nomads batting fails to meet the challenge set by Privateers
This was the first time Nomads and Privateers had met. Nomads President Michael Blumberg first played for Privateers in 1966 and has been a member since 1967. His first overseas tour was with Privateers to Denmark 1967. One of the older Privateers asked MB what was his connection with Nomads CC ?!Nomads returned to Chiswick House after a gap of some 10 years to play a well known, and resurgent side The Privateers. They looked to be a well drilled bunch, mainly in their 20s, with a smattering of experience & well led by Meacock Snr. As half of the side appeared to be stuck in traffic Nomads elected to bat upon winning the toss, a decision that in the cold light of day may have been an error. However, on paper Nomads boasted a strong top 6. Paper counts for nothing! Off the back of 2x scores in the 90s for Wargrave, Mark Richards was dismissed in the 1st over and India over 50s cricket Pawan Malik was “adjudged” LBW for a 1st ball 0. Jack Massey then played one stroke too many and Hornsey cricketer Charlie Moore chipped back to a jubilant Nettleton. Nomads 72-7. Captain Brockton, now past 50 found support from Chinaman bowler Ash Arora (41) and the pair added 53 with Ash much the aggressor. With the field spread and an inability to hit the ball over the top the Nomads skipper was forced to push singles (or scamper twos) & he was the final man out for 68. The team total of 159 was considered below par, but the wicket was far from a road. Nomads also boasted a varied attack. Shawl and Malik took the new cherry and beat the edge more times than this writer can mention, however no wicket came despite both running in with gusto (but no luck). Ash Arora & young Charlie Moore were introduced, leg-spin and Chinaman working in tandem, and two wickets a piece got Nomads back in the game. Privateers reduced to 92-4 and the game in the balance. Sadly Charlie dropped Bill Meacock, a simple catch to mid off shelled and from that point on the game was a foregone conclusion. Meacock and Twyford saw the Privateers to a 6 wicket win with some 8 overs remaining. Nomads left the field to lick their wounds. Professor Page did not bowl and was quick to apportion this to the Nomads defeat.
