Sunday May 10th v Follies Farm Old Spots CC

Match 16 NOMADS CC v FOLLIES FARM OLD SPOTS CC at Follies Farm High Street Green Chiddingfold Surrey GU8 4YB Sunday May 10th 1.00pm delayed by rain – 20/20 overs, 4 max per bowler

Old Spots win at a fast trot

Nomads set off in the morning from a variety of locations in the dry and returned likewise. However as we arrived at Follies Farm it was spitting raindrops and soon settled into persistent drizzle and later genuine rain. The forecast claimed it would stop by 2pm but it did not. The covers were put over the pitch and both teams settled into beer and Charlie Dickins’ excellent Rosé wine. As rain persisted so we took an early Tea though Vishal denied lettuce and tomatoes matched his vegetarian needs. Eventually the rain stopped and so a 20/20 match was agreed.

Victor won the toss and elected to bat. He and Mark opened and soon had the score rollicking along Vic slapping a series of boundaries and Mark beetling up and down the pitch. Unfortunately both miscued to be caught out so we were 57-2 in the 8th over. Rob Jones and Matt Clifford kept the boundaries flowing but by the time they were out,111-4 in the 16th over the run rate had slipped from 8 to 7 per over so we needed a surge over the last four overs. Simon d’Ardenne and Tom Marshall swung their bats but seldom beat the deep set field. Sajjad scored his first run at Follies after several attempts. So Nnomads finished on 142 perhaps 20 short of the hoped for target.

However the Cognescenti considered this to be a challenging total on a soft slow pitch and we had some good bowlers!

Things went very well to start with as Sajjad bowled opener Spicer first ball and bowled a wicket maiden. The second over from Steve Walshe received little respect conceding 15.Sajjad then bowled the other opener at which point he had taken 2 wickets off 9 balls for one run. Young Harry Griffiths now joined Priest and these two smashed 72 in 9 overs before Rob Jones bowled Priest for 45. Hope joined Griffiths with the reputation of being a stodgy batter but instead smote two 6s and two 4s before being bowled by Clifford. Harry Griffiths finished on 66 not out,a fine innings including two 6s and eight 4s. Nomads bowlers had taken something of a mauling and Follies won with 4 overs to go.

Post match continued with much conviviality before departing. A select few Nomads stopped off for further reflection in a nearby hostelry to be met by two Follies Old Spots one of whom we gave a lift home but not before another round.

This was Nomads return after a gap of ten years. The record now stand as 10 wins for FFOS & 7 wins for Nomads and one draw in 1999!

A day ruined by the weather but enriched by the company. Many thanks Guy Gibson and Old Spots.
