Frail Nomads just fail to save match

It was unfortunates that so few Nomads were available for this match especially as for Roydon it was to be the last ever. We briefly made 11 but then young Winnie Jewell was summoned to play a Hockey match. The President had a gammy right knee and elected to score so we played with 10.

There were two debutants and many of the players were unknown to the skipper which makes captaining difficult. In the event Nomads bowled quite tidily and with some better catching may have put pressure on the Roydon innings. Indeed debutant Patel recorded 7 2 14 0, exemplary figures, and perhaps should have bowled much more. After 22 overs Roydon had reached 101 but for no wickets thanks to some dropped catches. However the innings accelerated somewhat as the last 20 overs produced 151 runs with Cox completing an unbeaten century while Fredericka and Brooks hit fifties. Nomads took one wicket as Julian Jewell took a catch the deep off Chris Page.

The former legendary Roydon tea was absent for this match so it was bring your own which did little to stimulate Nomads batting.

For some brief moments the assembled Roydon supporters feared a Nomads onslaught. In the first over Julian Jewell smote two sixes but four wickets fell for a mere 41. There then followed a productive stand of 51 before Keith Alexander gloved a ball that lifted, 92-5 off 21 overs. At the other end was Mark Richards in fine form but would anyone stay with him? Chris Page hung in there grittily for a while as Mark struck boundaries. Alas Page fell at 126 to be followed by Richards who made 53. Danny Dawson and Phil Mitchell have been competent cricketers usually batting up the order so Nomads were still confident we could draw the match.

However with all the Roydon fielders crowded round the bat with the penultimate ball Brekkefat got one to lift sharply and Danny Dawson edged to Fredericks at 3rd slip. Fredericks then managed to fumble the catch yet his juggling skill proved adequate to the task and to much joy from the rest of the team Roydon had won their last ever match.

Nomads have played nine matches with Roydon winning three, losing three and drawing three, a symmetrical series.

The New Inn had played host to Roydon CC and their opponents for many decades. Following this match, the last ever for Roydon, there were speeches and presentations made in commemoration of the Club’s successful history. In particular ‘Mr Roydon Cricket’ Jeff Pond spoke eloquently and a presentation was made to the New Inn Landlady who had supported the club with loads of food to complement the drinks for as long as anyone could remember. A good number of Nomads, all the Roydon players plus a good gathering of past Roydon players attended the wake. Farewell Roydon CC!
