Nomads end just short
The all day Sunday match at Merrow was always most welcome as the hospitality, food, wine and Port was most generous as well as sumptuous.
This was a match dominated by two centuries. The first a huge one of 151 was struck by Jamieson of Merrow whilst the rest of the top order was swept away. Merrow were 49-4 all out to Andy Gregory. When Blumberg removed Alder for 22 the Merrow score had reached 123-5 off 36 overs. Then partnered by Crook (21*) Jamieson then added 107 runs in 16 overs for Merrow to declare at 230 off 52 overs.
Nomads replied powerfully as Whiteway and Williams added 117 for the 1st wicket off 27 overs. Russ Mann was out with the score at 149 and then Alex Smith with Williams took the score to 215 in the 44th over before he bowled by P Windus. P Windus' 2nd spell was to have a crucial effect on the result. With 3 overs left Nomads needed 16 runs to win with 3 overs to go. Somehow the pressure got to Nomads as Gregory was run out and Fanthorpe swung and was bowled and Williams was off strike too much. Nomads needed 7 off the last over bowled by P Windus but managed just 3 including a leg bye. So it was a draw with Mark Williams unbeaten on 112 and Nomads five wickets down.
There were some grumbles that Mark should have accelerated with greater effect but as the jugs went down after the match all agreed we had experienced a remarkable match. July 8, 2020 4:28 pm
