Gaieties no match for Nomads at Ascott Park

Nomads played Gaieties in the annual Pinter, Gooding and Lamb match, again at the idyllic setting of Ascott Park. Under largely blue skies and very pleasant weather for 1st September Tim Schneider of the Gaieties won the toss and had no hesitation in electing to bat first. He took 1st strike, partnering with long standing Gaiety Shomit Dutta and the pair put on 80 for the first wicket despite some impressive seam bowling from Sajjad Shawl and James Hamilton. Indeed, the ever watchful Schneider was happy to leave both bowlers almost exclusively on length in the opening salvo.

Dutta looked to be struggling for form and timing, hit inthe midriff on a couple of occasions from Hamilton who was bowling with decentpace & rhythm, however the Gaieties batsman battled on. Shawl and Hamilton were removed from theattack to fight another day and the introduction of Will Consett immediatelymade not one but two breakthroughs for the Nomads, Dutta caught by aback-peddling Kandampully at wide mid-on and debutant Dias caught behind byDuncan Ellis who was enjoying a very solid day behind the stumps.

Ash Arora was wheeling away from the pavilion end causing Schneider and the amusingly named Shakeshaft all sorts of issues. Hugo Morris, stationed at slip shelled Shakeshaft on two occasions, off Arora and Consett, and he went on to score 53.  Schneider crawled to 45(in 39 overs) before eventually looking to up the rate and he was LBW to Chris Royals from the first genuinely attacking shot he played.  Royals was the only Nomad bowler to take some punishment, mainly from the broad blade of Hugo Thurston who was batting at no5.  Thurston (26) seemed to be ploughing a lone furrow as the introduction of Shawl for a second spell reduced the Gaieties from 184-5 to 192-9 in about 15 minutes. Shawl (4-38) used his in-ducking Yorker to good effect claiming 4 wickets in 2 overs, the Gaieties tail having no answer for his pacy full deliveries. Arora was rewarded with the wickets of Shakeshaft and Thurston, in what would be his final Nomads game in 2019 as he returned figures of 2-50.

Veteran cricketer and Blum look-a-like Mike Kirkwood was not sent out to face what was due to be Shawl’s hat-trick ball as he was not ready  so Gaieties decided to declare on 192-9 from 49.5 overs and Shawl would be on a hat-trick in the next Nomads game he plays.  Nomads would receive approx. 45 overs in reply.  Tea is always quite an event at Ascott Park and the sides were not to be disappointed, umpire Blumberg was seen going back for a third helping of Victoria sponge!

After tucking into some tasty treats at tea, Kandampully and Brockton then tucked into the Gaieties opening attack. Sam Khalique bowled nicely, but without reward, possibly kept on for a couple of overs too long and fellow opener Locute was negotiated with relative ease, once the Nomads pair worked out his quick Chinamen deliveries didn’t actually deviate off the straight and narrow.  The pair added a 50 stand in the 11th over and increased this to 100 in the 20th & Brockton first to his 50 with a pull for 4 off a now tiring Khalique.  Schneider seemed to be running out of ideas and it appeared the Gaieties bowling stocks were not overflowing, missing long time members Burton and Cowley through injury and sickness respectively.

Shakeshaft turned his arm over, bowling some accurate offies and fellow Chinaman bowler (when has anyone played in a game with three Chinamen bowlers ??. Hugo Thurston tried his luck but looked rusty, sending down some loose deliveries.  Kandampully was now also passed his half century and was motoring along at quite a pace, with 150 now on the board. It became a case of when and not if for a Nomads win, as veteran Kirkwood was thrown the ball as a last throw off the dice.   It nearly worked as a fierce drive from Kandampully was shelled by the old stager. Nomads were now just a whisker from victory, Locute was re-introduced and Brockton drove crisply though the covers off the back foot to complete the Nomads win and his hundred.  The Nomads skipper finishing on 103* well supported by Kandampully (79*) who has been in sublime form for the Nomads all season.

So Nomads winners by the massive margin of ten wickets with nine overs of the 20 still to play. Worthy winners of the match, in a game we all hope Charlton Lamb and Ozzie Gooding would have enjoyed even if Harold Pinter would have been seriously unimpressed with the result.  Good cricket played in a decent spirit at an attractive venue, and a few beers after. Nomads retired to The Ship Inn located in the near-by village of Wingrave for a celebratory ale or two, jugs from the two Nomads match winners and smiles all around as we heartedly wished Ash Arora a safe trip back to India.

Sincere thanks to Nomads President Michael Blumberg and Gaieties Chairman Roger Davidson  for officiating as well as our gratitude to the Ascott Park team for accommodating Nomads in 2019. We look forward to returning to the beautiful setting during the 2020.
