Leatherhead tail hangs on for draw.
Nomads were denied a victory to sign off the 1981 season by an obdurate 9th wicket stand.Nomads had bowled 48 overs at Leatherhead 24 of them by Steve Scowen who recorded a fifer but could not break the 9th wicket stand,Nomads bowled 19 maiden overs. Presumably John Nagenda was injured or considered it appropriate that two tailenders who had not batted should have a bowl and indeed Wheeler and Leahy took two wickets.
Nomads had won the toss and batted first and made a steady start after Alastair Symondson had gone cheaply thanks to a fifty from skipper David Fermont thus reaching, with the fall of Blumberg(33), 107-3. The innings had been interrupted at noon by showers for 30 minutes which was to influence the result. However Nomads then went into collapse mode losing 4 more wickets for just 10 runs. The innings was rebuilt by Oliver Croom-Johnson and Tony Whiteway (batting rather low for him). These two added a further 34 before the declaration came at 151-7 off 59 overs at 3.30pm.
Leatherhead were soon in trouble and at 42-6 staring defeat in the face but despite losing two more wickets quickly, 55-8, Norman and Keatley hung on to deprive Nomads of victory. Leatherhead finished on 73-8 off 48 overs. The missing 30 minutes at midday in the event proved a major factor in the result.
This being the last match of the season Nomads lingered late in a vain attempt to rid their hosts of any alcoholic stock but it was a close run thing!
