Nomads set target too far for Harpenden
Nomads continued their winning streak with a 49 run at Hertfordshire Premier Div club Harpenden and as part of their 2022 cricket week.
Under blue skies and a temperature pushing 30 degrees Nomads unsurprisingly elected to bat upon winning the toss. Talented Eastcote youngster Anay Jariwala and Tom Brockton added 59 in 13 overs before the former got a leading edge back to off-spinner Griggs for 27. This brought in Chingford’s overseas player Tom Balkwill, the two Tom’s added 108 runs in good time, Balkwill in-particular looking in good touch with 4 maximums, cleverly targeting the shorter boundary towards the newly refurbished pavilion.
Brockton, shelled by his counterpart Reeves when on 47 was out for 87 from 106 balls, a delivery from Chittimalla flicking his front pad and cannoning into off stump. Balkwill made his way merrily to a century before gallantly retiring on 101 from 71 balls. A 6th century of the season from Balkwill and his 2nd for Nomads in 2022.
The wicket was not quite the usual Harpenden “belter” but the fast outfield more than made up for any misgivings in the pitch. Nomads 210-3 and cameo innings from Owen Marshall (15), debutant Aftab Ahmed (11) & Jack Ellis (13*) allowed the Nomads to declare on 275-6 from 49 overs. Harpenden would receive a very similar amount in reply.
After a tasty tea (and a San Miguel) Nomads were quickly into their stride courtesy of a superb new ball spell from young Jack Ellis who cleaned up Gill & Bailey in an impressive 6 overs. At the other end Ben Ralphs was not finding things as easy as Kalathili cut merrily racing to 35 from 40 balls before Ralphs had the last laugh, trapping him in front (given by Nick Stevenson and that is unusuall). Harpenden 65-3 from 15 overs.
Although two further wickets were lost via Owen Marshall, the feeling was the game was in the balance with their two best players at the crease, Bains & Captain Reeves. Bains batted with controlled aggression & Reeves opted for the aerial route, but once he was dismissed by Andy Marshall (2-26) & then Bains for 90, caught at long-off by Nirav Jairwala (dad) bowled Anay Jariwala (son) the Nomads knew they were home and dry.
Jack Ellis capped a fine day for the Ellis’ by supplying the coup de gras and clean bowing Griggs to end with 3-28. Duncan Ellis had taken two smart catches standing up earlier in the afternoon. Harpenden all out for 226 with 6 overs remaining, some 49 short of the Nomads target.
A quiet day for the old curmudgeon Chris Page, who had bowled only 1 over, but his sprits were lifted when a pint of Fanny Ebbs Tring bitter was produced for him to tuck into.
Comments after the game were when the last time 3 sets of father & sons had played for Nomads (Ellis x2, Jariwala x2 & Marshall x2). Answers on a postcard.
Our thanks to the ever jovial Nick Reeves for his hospitality & to regular Nomad official Nick “Stevo” Stevenson for standing. We wish Harpenden CC all the very best for the remainder of their 2022 league season.
