Nomads draw with a much improved Montenotte

A bright and sunny Thursday lunchtime greeted the Nomads throng as they played out a most entertaining match, and closest for quite some years vs Montenotte who had become something of the whipping boys in recent seasons. Nomads boasted a strong batting line up, so no surprise Andy Newton elected to insert the visitors to Highgate CC, despite the Montenotte side having a much more youthful feel to it. No place for the Plowright Brothers (Thornton must have been relieved) and sadly Charlie Meyers is no longer with us.

The in-form pair of Kandampully and Brockton opened up for the Nomads, having knocked off 190 odd the previous Sunday for the loss of 0 wickets the duo were in bullish mood and Kandampully got off the mark with a fearsome smite through extra cover in the opening salvo. The pair added 88 before Brockton chopped on off the bowling of Blyghton, but there was no let up for Montenotte as no3 was Damon Wilson, whose track record vis this particular opposition is 2nd to none.

He and Kandmpully added just over 100 in just 15 overs before Vic was needlessly caught at long off looking to bring up his ton with a maximum. The Nomads batter trudged off disappointed, but to a rapturous applause from both the Nomads, spectators and home fielders. An excellent innings and just two short of a ton. Sanjay Beri strode in at no4 and promptly smoked his first ball straight out of the ground for 6 (no sighter needed for the strong Surrey over 50s cricketer!). He repeated the dose in the following over and at one point was closing in on Damon Wilson as the pair reached their half centuries off successive balls. The returning Blyghton’s figures took something of a battering & skipper Newton’s flighted filth was treated with disdain by the Nomads batters. With the declaration in sight Wilson miscued and was taken at mid-wicket, and then unfortunately debutant and thespian Max Bennett was run out, being sent back by Beri. Nomads closing on a enormous 297-3 in just shy of 37 overs with plenty of batting left in the tank, Harry Kandampully, Antoniades and Thornton as well as Dr Chris Stride. Montenotte would get in the region of 42-45 overs to chase this total, but with short boundaries and a better wicket than usual, plus the youthful exterior of the home side a close game was in prospect.

The usual delicious Thai spread was laid on for tea (with several of the Nomads opting for 2nd helpings after the game) and the visitors took the field with Stride taking the new cherry in partnership with Harry Kandampully. Udar deposited his first ball straight back over Stride’s head, but then perished 2 balls later to an impressive caught and bowled from the Sheffield based Academic. At one point Montenotte were well placed at 103-2 from 22 overs with Wahab & Blyghton batting nicely, but the game changed with the introduction of Ben Butcher and old stager Paul Fielding, who shared 7 wickets. Damon Wilson kept impressively taking two sharp catches from Butcher and Dino Antoniades took a swirling catch to dismiss the obdurate Plum who had been the lone shining light in the 2018 contest.

With overs running out occasional Nomad Paul Patel was the sole victim of the dreaded finger of death from Umpire Moran, but Bradbury had batted with no little skill and for more than 15 overs to get his side to the brink of a draw. Sanjay Beri was introduced to try and prize a wicket, but his single over was not successful and Nomads turned back to Fielding. Alas, Rawson was equal to the task and Montennotte scraped home with a daw finishing 9 down and some 55 short of their target. Butcher with 4-80 was the pick of the Nomads bowlers

So Nomads unable to force the win, Rawson and Fletcher obdurate in their defence, Mike Furness, another master of the forward press in years past looked on with pride while supping a large glass of Merlot. Familiar faces spectating included Nomads supremo Michael Blumberg, old curmudgeon Chris Page as well as “match manager” Andy Collins and pal Steve Lincoln.

The series now stands at Nomads 6 wins, Montenotte 5 wins, 5 draws, 1 abandoned as a draw and 1 cancelled for rain.

Our thanks to Highgate CC for hosting us, as well as serial not-outer Nick “Stevo” Stevenson and serial gun-slinger Chris Moran for officiating. The familiar faces of Beryl Casale and Peter Gilbert, ever present in the scorebox for Montenotte, again did a sterling job.
