Nomads make it 8 wins on the bounce
Nomads made the trip down to the Essex/Thanes estuary & to play Leigh on Sea CC as part of their 2022 cricket week. After a very enjoyable inaugural match in 2021 both sides assembled in good time for the scheduled 11:30am start.
Making their Nomads debuts were Tim & Josh Daniels (Tim was also responsible for the sumptuous Durban curry which would prove to be a feature of the day). Leigh on Sea elected to bat first and 16 year old Josh Daniels took the new ball in partnership with 66 year old David MacVicar. The Leigh on Sea top 4 had a youthful look to it, and MacVicar struck early with Archer LBW (the less said about David's dropped caught and bowled the over before the better, definitely a contender for the goober of the season). MacVicar returned miserly figures of 2-23 from 8 overs.
Daniels also took a wicket, with his pacey seamers, but was at times erratic, and he was replaced by the smiling Zimbabwean Raymond Lashwayo. Professor Page, restored to the Nomads XI after being "dropped" for the marquee Hurlingham fixture wheeled away from the Chalkwell end, clean bowling Lewis West.
Lashwayo was giving it a real rip, and he reduced the home side to 134-5 at lunch from 30 overs. Lashwayo's wickets included Spencer & Mellar, both in the Leigh 1st XI. However, star players Waller & Eliot were at the crease and looking dangerous.
Lunch was quite the affair, 1 hour set aside to devour the Durban Curry, served with rice, a vegetarian side & naan bread.
With full bellies the Nomads re-took the field at 2:30pm & Waller had his sights set on a century, taking a particular liking to Andrew Marshall, who despite bowling rather well was flogged for 57 from 8 overs.
Waller struck 4 massive 6s on his way to a hundred before gallantly retiring. Nomads somewhat lacklustre in the field after the lunch interval, allowing Leigh on Sea to accelerate to 254 from 46 overs. Raymond Lashwayo, 2-71 bowled impressively, although his later overs were dealt with severely by Waller.
Nomads would get almost exactly the same numbers of overs back, Brockton and Kandampully opening for the visitors. The pair added 77 before Kandampully (33) was bowled by West. Brockton was struggling for any kind of timing at the other end and was shelled by Collins (a dolly some would say would contend with MacVicor's drop earlier in the day)
At the start of the 20 overs Nomads were well placed at 142-1 but Brockton's luck ran out when Sexton clung onto a screamer at 3rd slip off the bowling of Spence. The Nomads captain out for a gritty 52 containing 8 boundaries.
Sporting his Billericay CC shirt, Paul Wakefield was looking in supreme touch (commented on by Waller "this geezer's not bad for an old'n"). He glided his way to 50, ably supported by Neal Kanabar. When Wakefield was bowled for 60, featuring 11 boundaries, Kanabar went into overdrive, hitting a massive 6 & 3 boundary 4s in one over to get Nomads to the brink of victory.
This was achieved with another lusty blow down the ground, Kanabar reaching his maiden Nomads half century, 53 not out, and well supported by India over 50s cricketer Saurabh Wahi.
It has to be said the Leigh on Sea keeper didnt have the best of days, 26 byes being conceded to go along with his duck at the top of the order ! Nomads running out winners by 7 wickets and with 5 overs to spare.
However, there was no doubt the star of the show was the delicious Durban curry & both teams and spectators repaired to the sanctity of the Leigh on Sea bar as some unpleasant drizzle set in around 20 mins after the close of play.
Our thanks to Tim Daniels, Mark Sexton, Simon Burch, Karen behind the bar & Dean Waller for such a wonderful days hospitality. Many thanks also to jovial umpire Nick Stevenson who made the trip from the city to officiate (and sample some of the Essex beers)
We wish Leigh on Sea all the very best for the remainder of their 2022 league campaign and look forward to our return in 2023.
