Kirman and Defreitas scupper Nomads plan

This was our only visit to Sudbury Court the club that bred a family of Defreitas cricketers. In 2004 the club closed and joined Wembley CC. Many moons later we were to encounter again Charlie Meyers with Montenotte and Wembley and Mike Kirman played for us against Tiddington.

Nomads’ opening bowlers bowled tidily and when Blumberg came on and removed the openers a low score seemed probable. However Mike Kirman ground out an unbeaten 77 forging useful partnerships with first Gray and then Singh so Sudbury declared on 186-4 off 45.1 overs.Nomads would have 43 overs in reply after Tea.

We set off chasing a target of 185 with some confidence as the two youngsters from Indian Gymkhana,Atul Surve and Naresh were good players and Surve had scored 79 against Stowe Templars. In the event Defreitas, a brother of the England player, removed our top three but it was a mid order collapse that put paid to our ambitions precipitated by Charlie Meyers removing Blumberg and Fairfax. There was a bit of a flourish from our 8th wicket pair but then Gray and a returning Defreitas finished the innings with Nomads 32 runs short.
