Some of the Ditchling initials may be wrong and who is APW ?

Ditchling save the day

Paul Winson of Thame CC and a contemporary of the Hon Sec at Birmingham University stroked an elegant 83 compiling useful stands with Michael Blumberg 33 and Mike Willis 44.The innings was declared after 58 overs with the total 208. Ditchling’s bowlers had toiled away restraining the batsmen without much reward. Ditchling’s ground is picturesque but its pitches invariably tricky with occasional low bounce caused by the invasion of inappropriate grass from the neighbouring meadow.

This left some 54 overs to bowl out the home side although we had only Tony Clarke among our front line bowlers. Clarke removed opener Bradley for a duck  but was thereafter unrewarded in 12 more overs. Such and Wright made a substantial 2nd wicket stand before both were dismissed by Symondson and Blumberg. The latter did take 3 more wickets and Peter Mathews took one. An unbeaten innings of 36 by Haining who found useful support from APW 14  took Ditchling to safety drawing the match with 173-7.

A very enjoyable day and long evening thanks to Ditchling’s excellent hospitality.
