Marshall Law, but still a draw
Nomads were invited to be part of Nick Stevenson’s 50th celebrations which included a cricket match at his home club, Barnes. Several of the Nomads met pre-match to join Stevo for a livener in the Coach & Horses, where the two captains amusingly “tossed up” over a cold Peroni. Barnes were asked to bat, on a used wicket.
Officiating, the birthday himself, amazingly on 41 dismissals for the season and Charles Fellows-Smith. Bill Rodwell completed the set, Barnes & Nomads scorer. The day had something of festival feel to it, with a BBQ planned post-cricket. Tom Marshall and debutant Max Ayliffe took the new cherry for the Nomads and Marshall was immediately rewarded with the wickets of Taylor & Durling respectively. However, this brought former Barnes 1st XI skipper (and occasional Nomad) James Alder to the crease and he set about the Nomads bowlers, taking a liking to Jon Gibson who was uncharacteristically off colour with the ball. Fellow Sherfield on Loddon cricket Steve Dummer took a cracking catch off Marshall at gully, full stretch high above his head off a thick nick to get rid of Max’s brother, Freddie Ayliffe.
Although Nomads continued to chip away, their fielding lapsed towards the back end of the innings and a century Partnership between Alder (68) and Slater (67) as well as useful contributions down the order from Camps and Chambers (also an occasional Nomad) got the home side to 245-8 dec from exactly 40 overs. Andy Marshall was rewarded with 3 wickets, Joshi was accurate but luckless as two catches were shelled off his bowling. The star of the show was Tom Marshall with 5-34 in three separates spells. All 8 wickets taken by The Marshalls and Barnes posting a par total of 245-8 from 40 overs. Also a special mention to young Jack Ellis, who bowled three accurate overs of left arm seam, only his 4th adult game (three of which have been for Nomads).
Nomads would need to score at a shade over 6 an over to achieve this total, and the in form Vic Kandampully opened with club captain Brockton. The pair batted in rather contrasting styles, Vic lambasting anything over-pitched to the rope while Brockers scurried between the wickets. It was clear the track was now starting to fall apart, offering some variable bounce and two paced deliveries, neither aiding the Nomads. Vic was to 50 swiftly, containing 10 boundaries and although South African overseas Robbins ran in with gusto both the Nomads batters were unflinching.
Kandampully was dismissed in somewhat comical circumstances, edging a very very wide delivery where Taylor dived at first slip to take an impressive catch. Brockton was then to 50, flogging Christopher Perfect, whose line and length was not (I’ve read that before) to get to 50, but then played a foolish lofted drive and was caught at mid-off by Ayliffe.
Dummer went for 0, but youngsters Max Ayliffe and Tom Marshall steadied the ship with important knocks. However the rate was rising and both were dismissed looking to up the rate. Nomads now needed 8 an over, Jon Gibson was cleaned up by James Alder, and an accurate few overs from Chris Chambers sunk the home side further into the mire. Morris and Joshi, however added some respectability from the score with cameo innings, Perfect’s second spell was as toothless as his first and Nomads ended up some 20 runs short, but gaining a credible draw against a strong Barnes XI.
After such an entertaining contest the sides posted for a team photo before cracking open a couple of bottles of fizz, no Prosecco for Stevo, these were magnums of Lorrent Perrier and Dom Perigno, generously supplied by our host. The post cricket BBQ was spectacular and both sides tucked into the tasty treats that were on offer, which included Borewors (South African Sausage) and delicious spicy chicken thighs. The bar continued to do a roaring trade until well after 10pm when only Stevo and a handful of the Nomads were left.
Other interested spectators included Michael Blumberg, Danny Buckland, Jared Schmidt & James Drake Brockman, “Double-Barrelled Brockers”, as well as Peter Gleavis from Cricket Grounds of the UK (and yes Andy he did get a photo of you shelling the catch off Tom).
Our most hearty birthday wishes to Nick “Stevo” Stevenson and thanks for a wonderful day at Barnes CC.
