Nomads spinners secure victory

A strong Nomads XII assembled at Sawbridgeworth, a fine mix of experience and youth, on a rare hot day in the 2023 summer. Skipper Hamilton won the toss, and with a long, strong and mostly youthful batting lineup, elected to bat first.

However, it was the South African cricket veteran Bloch that got proceedings underway for the Nomads, confidently dealing with the opening bowlers with little alarm. At the other end, 19 year old Nomads debutant Arshad took a liking to the Sawbridgeworth attack and with the help of a flat wicket and a short fast outfield, the score raced to 72-0 after just 11 overs, Arshad bringing up his 50 in just 32 balls. However, Arshad then played one shot too many as he holed out for a well made 60.

Young Nomads run-machine Ramesh joined Bloch, who was still only on 10 and demonstrating textbook nominative determinism. The pair batted through to lunch, the scoreboard reading 150-1 after 27 overs. Both teams ventured into the lunch room where a delightful offering of "Mac'n'Cheese" and vegetarian lasagne was presented, as well as a lovely dessert.

The Nomads looked to accelerate the scoring and did so with Ramesh smashing 26 runs off the first over after lunch, including a reverse sweep for 6. He hammered his way to a very quick 82 off 60 balls before a strong hit was well held at mid off.

Bloch, now starting to accelerate, was still batting at the other end, and now joined by Hindocha, brought up his 50. He was eventually dismissed with the score on 226 for a well crafted 71.

Things started to look brighter for Sawbridgeworth, as the Nomads proceeded to lose 5 wickets for only 30 runs. Following the dismissal of Bloch, Hindocha holed out for 23, before Khokar and Mohammed quickly followed him back to the pavilion after being out in the same manner. Then late arrival Keyes was caught behind first ball to see the Nomads wavering at 256-7, with lots of time left in the game to play.

However, this did not deter Scotland U19 player Chris Cole, also making his Nomads debut and batting at number 5, as he continued to take the attack to Sawbridgeworth while these wickets fell at the other end. He was then stumped, for 39 off 28 balls, with the Nomads 281-8. Hamilton joined Farrington at the crease and the pair saw the Nomads to 299 when Farrington was caught square leg for 3. The Nomads declared on 299-9, Hamilton finishing 16 not out, and setting Sawbridgeworth a nice round 300 to win.

Sawbridgeworth started positively, depositing the short pitched bowling of Chakravarty to all parts of the ground, going for 39 runs off his 4 overs. Hamilton (9-2-34-2) was more consistent at the other end, bowling all 9 overs from the pavilion end before tea, his wicket comimg from a well taken catch at mid off by Arshad. Tea was taken with Sawbridgeworth on 100-1 after 17, their chase starting well.

Page was introduced to the attack after tea and immediately broke through dismissing the Sawbridgeworth number 3, bowled leg stump. Soon after the new batsman, Sawbridgeworth's Australian overseas, was caught long on by Hamilton, off the bowling of young Blackheath all-rounder Khokar. Sawbridgeworth rebuilt somewhat, the opener still going well at the other end, the score reaching 174-3.

The introduction of off-spinner Arshad brought the downfall of the opener, caught well on the line by Keyes. In the following over, the other "in bat" was neatly pouched by Farrington off the bowling of Khokar (9-0-39-2) and immediately Sawbridgeworth made it clear they had abandoned their chase as they started to play in a much more defensive manner.

This brought about the reintroduction of Page (9-1-65-1) to "dangle the carrot", however no false shot could be forced from the stubborn Sawbridgeworth batsmen. Therefore, Arshad was reintroduced from the other end, and the leg spin of Hindocha was brought on as the Nomads fielders crept ever closer to the bat.

Now into the last 20 overs, the wickets started to tumble. The pitch was inducing a lot of spin now, with Hindocha especially extracting some violent spit and turn off the pitch. Arshad castled the number 6, sliding one through the gate, before Hindocha trapped the number 8 lbw, with one that didn't turn. Hindocha (4-1-6-3) then quickly followed that up with two more quick wickets, first hitting the number 7 on the gloves with a jumping delivery, caught at second slip by Hamilton. Then Mohammed completed a swift stumping with the number 10 looking to hit it towards the vacant cow corner area.

Arshad (8-3-15-3) then bowled the number 9 through the gate as Sawbridgeworth were bowled out for 213 to complete an excellent bowling and fielding performance from the Nomads. Both teams repaired to the bar and many stayed well into the evening.

Many thanks to scorers David Rourke and Richard White and umpire Nick Stevenson. Supreme Leader and President Michael Blumberg was also present, and in fine spirits.
