Flat track defeats the Bowlers
This was the first time for nearly sixty years that Incogniti and Nomads had met(1967/68/69 at The Hurlingham Club). Nomads won the toss and skipper Abdi Zulfiqar elected to bat first. The Nomads innings was formidable against some friendly bowling with two debutants, the Arif brothers, scoring centuries. Narzm Mohammed sparkled for a while at the start setting the innings momentum at 7 runs per over which was retained almost to the end. A cameo from James Hamilton at the close saw Nomads to 307-2 off 45 overs at which point Abdi declared the innings. This left Incogniti with a potential 51 overs.
Abdi and Yasin opened the bowling and took two early wickets. Zulfiqar senior clean bowled number 4 Hussain with his fifth ball for 41,3-53 off 12 overs, somewhat short of the required run rate. Asif Ali now joined opener Nadir and these two added 83 off 17 overs before Yasin, having changed ends, had the opener caught by his son for 41. Incog Asif Ali had started quietly before striking a mighty six and then another four plus nine 4s before being bowled by Abdi for 81 and while at the crease gave Incogs a sniff of victory. Although Graeme and Malik hit another 68 runs punishing both the single overs bowled by James and Arnav the innings fell well short of target at 260-6. Abdi had rotated his bowlers and used seven in all yet could not break the seventh wicket partnership. Faham Zulfiqar finished with the tidy figures of 13 6 31 1.
Lunch and Tea were magnificent yet as much Tea was left as was consumed. Despite all that Tea and the excellent Datchet Bar the Incogs disappeared quickly post match as did half the Nomads. Paul Furness the Incogs’ Umpire and the Nomads Scorer did enjoy a pint of Rebellion together with Coca Cola drinking Yasin but it was disappointing that two Ancient Wandering Clubs did not socialise after the match on a beautiful evening. Also the tradition of centurions buying a jug was ignored! The Datchet Bar Lady was disappointed too.
Nevertheless an enjoyable day’s cricket played in good spirit.
