Chris Royals contrives another close finish
Nomads won the toss and elected to bat. James Hamilton fell early but Vic and Narzm added 106 in 16 overs before Narzm was caught behind off Wilson and then Stu Reeve fell cheaply. However at lunch with Vic still there a formidable total seemed likely. Lunch seemed to invigorate Wilson who extracted bounce removing both Vic and James Godden, 6-172 off 34.1. Debutant Tim Weston dug in while Matt Clifford swung merrily adding 67 runs off 8.3 overs. With Matt Clifford’s dismissal The skipper declared at 239-7, a rather generous gesture ! during his innings of 84 Vic passed 500 Nomads runs for the season. Nomads opened the bowling with Yasim and Joshi and although both took wickets the Hertford innings had started at pace . Max Lawrence(Hertford’s leading 1st XI batsman 2026) joined Samuel Pavey and these two added 100 runs in 9.5 overs setting Hertford onwards to a swift victory somewhat savaging Matt Clifford’s bowling but then In a brief spell James Hamilton removed Connor Duke for a duck and in a tidy spell of seam bowling Tim removed opener Samuel Pavey. With Hertford seemingly sailing to victory Nomads skipper created drama and excitement as having changed ends he took four cheap wickets reducing the Home side to 8-234. Was a miracle to be made? Sadly no as the ninth pair scored the remaining six runs to win, 240 in 34.4 overs! This had been a glorious warm day and an enjoyable day’s cricket with a good crowd of spectators at the end . Hertford’s umpire declined to stand in view of the heat and Nomads umpire gave up at Lunch. The only Hertford player to play in both 2025 and 2026 matches was Connor Duke and he recorded a duck in both games! Following our game there was a match between teams of Women, Girls and Boys batting in pairs which entertained both Nomads and Herftford players as they quaffed several beers post match. This was the second game managed by Chris Royals ending in a close finish with Nomads the losers. Somewhere in a break from a celestial endless game of Backgammon the unmistakable voice of John Nagenda was allegedly heard declaring “This Chris Royals, I fear he maybe another Crombie“.
