Fine Barrett Century alone deprives Nomads of victory
Nomads batted first and were in some trouble at 49-4.Oliver Croom-Johnson dug in but Blumberg(37) fell at 70 so half the side were out and Sonning's opening bowler Merry in fine form. Charles Penn and Croomers lasted until lunch and took the score to 111 before Penn bowled by Merry. At 2.34 Tony Lycett joined Croomers and transformed the innings adding 131 for the 7th wicket before the declaration came after 58 overs.Lycett had hit an unbeaten 73 with three 6s and four 4s.Croomers whose long vigil at the crease had begun at 11.43 had made a most valuable 55.
Sonnings innings in reply was one of contrasts. J Barrett hit 145 not out by the close while at the other end only one other batsmen reached double figures. Merry stood firm at one end as the score mounted from 191-7 to finish on 227 some 16 runs short of the winning target. Robin Symondson had a long bowl taking 3-64 off 19 overs seeking to compensate for his duck in the Nomads innings. Both Penns took wickets but not enough to force the win.
This was the sixth day of continuous cricket including the Sussex tour and
Ashtead. Only Andy Penn played all six.
