Both hits sixties including a six. There was also a mid order flourish from Robin Symondson and Bill Wilkinson so Nomads declared on 223-6 off 32.4 overs. The Hon Sec had missed most of the Sussex Tour despite being Tour Manager as his then partner Elizabeth Fletcher was recovering from an appendix operation. After much negotiation he was permitted to play on the Saturday at Middleton where he had played much of his cricket in the 1960s. Batting second Nomads opened with skipper Dr David Fermont and the Hon Sec Blumberg, after five dot balls the ‘learned medic’ struck the sixth ball straight and hard at short extra cover and shouted yes.  Blumberg was just run out for a duck without facing a ball. Some observers commented that never had anyone seen Blumberg run so fast but all in vain.

On his reaching the clubhouse a Nomad remarked “I don’t think David wanted to open with you.” but in general everyone seemed to think it was hilarious! As so often with a pointless run out several more wickets fell cheaply putting the Nomads innings in some peril but Fermont held firm making fifty and some lower order resistance took Nomads to safety. The club skipper had a good tour 199 runs for twice out and three fifties.

On returning home late the  description of his duck brought forth such hilarity there was a danger Liz’s stitches would burst. Indeed this hilarity at the Hon Sec’s duck  was repeated by Elizabeth’s friends and the sorority. It took several decades for the Hon Sec to appreciate the comedy!

However ‘She who had to be obeyed’ did melt a bit for next day she said “You had better play on Bank Holiday Monday in view of your abject performance on Saturday” and he did.

We were surprised to find Steve Scowen playing for Middleton. Even more surprising he lasted another year there!

The next day Nomads motored north to Ashtead and after a night back home played at Sonning on Bank Holiday Monday
