Nomads Chase 230

Nomads returned to Chingford CC for the traditional bank holiday fixture in good spirits. Vic won the toss and inserted the home side, who got off to a rocket of a start courtesy of Nic Knight (23). Fortunately, James Hamilton (1/22) pinned him LBW at the start of the 5th over, and put the brakes on with a 9 over spell of threatening inswing, including 3 maidens.
Hassan Khokhar was introduced, and removed the #3 almost immediately, but a long partnership of 65 between skipper Ross Simmons and Ali Butt threatened to take the game away from Nomads. Finally Khokhar struck Simmons in front of all three and removed him for a well-made 50. Ali Butt took control with a number of powerful shots off Vamsi Sukhavesi, but Hassan persuaded the #5 to loft a pitching wedge into the safe hands of Hamilton, and followed up by snicking off the #6 for a duck, caught by Richard Eldridge.
Khokhar completed his 5-fer by nicking off Ali Butt for a powerful 72 (at better than a run a ball). Figures of 14 overs, 2 maidens, 5/63 were a fair reflection of a fine spell. The #7 and #8 then batted until the declaration. Shaam Chakravarty nearly picked up Jedran (22*) – but the catch at slip was chalked off for a no ball. Ash Arora closed the innings by beating Dixon (24) in the flight to have him stumped by Eldridge (2 ct, 1 st).
The declaration duly came after 42.4 overs, setting Nomads 233 to win in only 37 overs. Even on such a quick outfield, this seemed a challenging ask, at more than 6 an over from the outset.
A good start would be required, and, after a tasty tea, Kandampully and Brockton delivered it, despatching the Chingford seamers to the leg-side boundary whenever they strayed too straight, and stealing singles with impunity. An opening stand of 103 from 100 deliveries was brought to an end by Kandampully (50) having a hack at the spinner and being bowled just before the start of the 20 overs.
This left Nomads needing 130 from 20 overs, with 9 wickets in hand. Unfortunately, Gardner was soon adjudged LBW off the swing of Noori, but Hamilton joined the club captain and soon set about accelerating the scoring with aggressive running and some fiercely hit shots.
After a useful partnership of 44, Brockton (60) eventually fell to the spinner, to be replaced by Paul Wakefield, who rotated the strike intelligently until he missed a straight one. Hamilton powered past 50 but was cleaned up from the last ball of the 34th over for a rapid 53 (from 40), which made the score 220/5. With 13 to win from 3 overs, Mark Richards (18*) and Ash Arora (10*) made no mistake, with Ash gliding the winning boundary through the covers with 7 balls to spare, to the acclaim of his teammates.
Nomads enjoyed a convivial evening in Chingford’s bar celebrating an excellent team performance and a very enjoyable day.
Our thanks to our hosts at Chingford CC, and to the team of match officials: Todd Holland, Vic Devers and Ian Fullbrook.
