Nomads prevail on Ladies Day

The Nomads assembled at Blackheath for the now traditional “Ladies Day” in good number. Host Vic Kandampully had worked hard to put together two competitive sides, and despite a brisk wind that picked up throughout the day, there was some sunshine to make the Pimms and prosecco laid on for the spectators all the sweeter. There was some alarm prior to the game as the car sent to collect Chris Page and Nomads President Michael Blumberg, designated scorer for the day, took a wrong turn and went northbound through the Blackwall Tunnel! Fortunately, both would reach the ground in the nick of time. It was decided that Blackheath would have first use of a firm and true looking pitch. Harefield’s James Hamilton ran in with gusto from the rugby stand end and was rewarded with three early scalps, including the Blackheath captain and groundsman, Rouse. He was supported well by Jemile Al-Darraji, who also took a good catch at long leg to dismiss Christian Gray off a top-edged hook. At 35-3 and in some trouble, Blackheath 1XI player Jhurani joined opening batsman Deal, and the two batted well for a time against the change bowling of Andy Marshall and Devam Shah. The total had moved past 100 by the time Deal mistimed a drive against Ben Butcher, the looping ball just about clutched by a relieved Kyle Bradley, stationed at point. From this point wickets fell with regularity. Just as Jhurani was starting to unfurl some more aggressive strokes he was involved in two disastrous run outs. First, he was the villain in Hingorani being run out by quite some distance attempting an impossible second run, courtesy of a trademan James Hamilton direct hit from long off. Then the tables turned as he himself was horribly run out by sometime Nomad Div Mishra, whose calling left much to be desired. Mishra himself then perished at the hands of Chris Page shortly afterwards. At 154-8 it looked like Blackheath might post a very under par score indeed, only for the youngster Katawal and, especially, Ahmed to strike some lusty blows to get the home side over the 200 mark. The final overs were not without controversy, as the previously unfortunate Hingorani, while standing as square leg umpire, failed to give Ahmed out stumped despite it being evident to all in the vicinity that he had not made his ground. This unsavoury incident hastened the declaration, and some tempers frayed as the players made their way into the Blackheath pavilion for a delicious tea. The reply was started by Kandampully and club captain Tom Brockton. Unfortunately, Kandampully departed early, caught in the gully. This brought Old Owens’ Naman Paropkari to the crease, who combined well with Brockton and created a good platform. Jhurani’s left arm spin was dispatched with regularity to the cover boundary by Brockton, who also seemed to provoke the Blackheath quick bowlers by not donning a helmet. With the score on 90, Paropkari was bowled by the burly left arm spinner Jiggins, who then immediately dismissed young Marcus Windsor for a globe in the same fashion. Al-Darraji then joined the Nomads’ club captain and progress became more serene. However, things became heated for the second time that day as Rouse became embroiled in a dispute with Page, who was the standing umpire, about the time taken to set fields. It was rumoured that the Hertfordshire League veteran Al-Darraji made his feelings known also. There followed a flurry of Nomads wickets, including Brockton holing out when looking on course for a hundred and two run outs, with Kyle Bradley one of the unfortunate victims. At 178-7 it appeared that a close finish, just like last year’s nailbiter, was on the cards. However, Hamilton and Marshall guided the Nomads home without further alarm, and with a few overs of the final hour to spare. Both sides repaired to the Blackheath pavilion, with Nomads President Michael Blumberg entertaining the assembled ladies over drinks. Our thanks to Blackheath for hosting, and Vic for putting together another superb day that is swiftly becoming one of the highlights of the Nomads’ calendar..... Ben Butcher

A trio of Blazers. A glass of Prosecco attacked the score book and gremlins sabotaged the electronic scoreboard. Nevertheless it all added up in the end!
