Dramatic collapse gives Claygate Victory
Nomads appeared to be in dominant position twice in this match only to lose control and subsequently lose a match they should have won.
Claygate batted first and Nomads limited attacK had done well to reduce the home side to 150-7 only for number nine 9 Spector to hit a swift fifty. Mike Hodd having taken two wickets and bowling a maiden with his high slung googlies was then savaged by Spector and a returning Fitchie could not stem the flood. As a result Claygate reached the comfort of 202-7 off 43 overs before declaring.
Nomads reply was positive with an 80 runs 1st wicket partnership between Roddy Grant and Hodd. Two more useful stands had taken the score to 151-2 whereupon Tomlin was stumped, Hilton was run out for a duck and then three more ducks and a singleton followed. Nomads had lost seven wickets for 18 runs!
Nevertheless with Tony Whiteway, Nomads all time heaviest run scorer, joining Grant success still seem likely. These two added 18 before Whiteway nicked it to the keeper. Peter Mathews was always an insecure number 11 who sometimes slogged with effect. If Nomads were to win centurion Roddy Grant had to keep the strike but within five runs of victory Mathews was trapped lbw by Simpson and Claygate had brought off a most remarkable victory leaving Roddy Grant unbeaten on 109, a magnificent knock. Whiteway had batted so low having had a long spell of bowling. Nomads were to rue that decision. But really Gentlemen four ducks!
Roddy Grant's jugs restored Nomads spirits at the bar afterwards.
