Fabulous BBQ and a win to match
An early morning of much text traffic as skipper and match manager Vic had gone in the back but luckily Rupert Style in UK for a short stay stepped in. Then when Nomads had arrived we found we were ten as Rahul was on hospital duties. Again luckily Ben had been staying with a friend in Newmarket who came to the match. Cricket gear was found and so Steve Grace made up the eleven.
Ben won the toss and elected to bat. Sam Owen and Rupert Style made a steady start putting on 58 off16 overs before Rupert fell lbw to Pearson who some 28 runs later had Sam caught on 55, 2-86 off 19 overs. Thereafter there was a series of promising cameos from Arnav, Rodney and George and a ninth wicket stand of 28 between Matt and Ben which took Nomads to 219-9 whereupon the innings was declared closed. Philanderers’ veteran spinner Coteman was the benefactor of some sloppy batting posting 5-49 off ten overs.
The slow over rate coupled with the protracted lunch interval caused the two skippers to forgo a tea interval but retain the last hour beginning at 5.45 pm.
Philanderers innings started with a mighty flourish as Rob Gill smashed George Gardners’ first three deliveries for four and in George’s second over Gill hit another four 4s. However this mayhem ended in the 4th over with Gill being run out by a direct hit from Arvan Kulkarni,1-33 off 4 overs. With Gill gone Ben replaced George and the innings’ momentum diminished. Joe Riley had Ed Pearson caught by Arnav,2-67 off 10 overs at which point Philanderers run rate was en route for their target. However although Seb Taylor was batting nicely the rest succumbed to Ben(4 wickets) and Matt Clifford, 5 wickets falling for 41. Butch eventually removed Taylor(49),7-108 off 25 overs. The tail now dug in with some obdurate blocking but Rodney Mupfudza removed number 9 George Dean. Coteman and Perkins held fought for several overs as Ben juggled with the bowlers and a host of very close fielders but with the fifth ball of the last over Arnav Kulkarni bowled Coteman. With the injured Means not batting Nomads had won.
Among the supporters who came to watch was an ederly gentlemean who also came to Fenners in 2020. He played with ‘Granny’ Alston and Keith Ellison(former Yorkshire skipper of Nomads) for Souwesters many moons ago”
This was very enjoyable day’s cricket with thanks to Philanderers and that fabulous BBQ.
This win brings our aggregate of wins ahead of loses for the first time this season. Hopefully an augur of good fortune henceforth.
