Teenagers Ollie and Suleiman star in Nomads win

The Rectory Field is swiftly gaining a reputation as a venue which produces thrilling games of Nomads cricket and once again, Nomads emerged victorious, this time against our old foes The Gaieties.
The Nomads were invited to field first, and the first major event of the game was an unfortunate one. Gaieties opener Woodhouse was struck on the hand by a low full toss, which led to him taking no further part in proceedings.
A breakthrough came shortly afterwards, as Harefield’s Shaam Chakravarty induced an edge behind by the number 3. Following this, spin was introduced, and Nomads were able to turn the screw against Gaieties’ captain and star batsman Schneider, and the veteran Dutta. This eventually led to a misjudgement from Schneider to give Hassan Khokar a prized scalp.
Dutta continued to be frustrated and wickets were soon tumbling, the pressure beginning to tell. Following a lengthy spell from Ben Butcher and the introduction of the veteran Chris Page, Gaieties were in severe trouble at 91-6, effectively 7.
At this stage, however, momentum began to change, as Perry, once of Northamptonshire 2XI, and Ulsterman Martin, combined to great effect. Their impetus gained Gaieties a quick 100 runs, and an eventual declaration was made with the score at 205-6 from 50 overs. Nomads would have only 35 overs to chase the total.
After a typically substantial and tasty tea, Nomads’ response got off the worst possible start, with Pete Deal and Billy Crone both dismissed by Martin in the first over without a run on the board. Deal was particularly unhappy at being adjudged LBW by Hassan Khokar, and made his displeasure known to anyone he encountered, despite mounting evidence that the decision had been the correct one.
Captain Vic Kandampully provided some impetus from an unfamiliar number 4 slot, making a swift 31, before he feathered an edge behind to leave the Nomads 3 down, with the senior batsmen back in the hutch. However, it was at this point that 2 youngsters, Ollie Burgess and Suleiman Khokar, combined to fantastic effect.
Khokar was undoubtedly the aggressor, with several lusty blows including an enormous straight six into the tennis courts. Burgess settled expertly into the anchor role, showing a maturity far beyond his years.
Throughout this period, the aforementioned Perry was bowling his left arm wrist spin from the Rugby Stand end, and he would continue to do so until the end of the game; indeed, 13 of the 35 overs Nomads faced were bowled someone who, just 6 years ago, was bowling to recent England opener Alex Lees in a county 2XI game.
Burgess and Khokar’s stand exceeded 100, and both passed 50, before Khokar was eventually dismissed attempting another maximum; Perry and Martin combining once again. Burgess and fellow youngster Finley Flint then put on around 20, before Burgess fell.
With a nervous and somewhat lengthy tail remaining, it was left to wicketkeeper Richard Eldridge and Flint to supply the coup de grace. Together they rotated the strike and punished any loose deliveries before, in the final over, Flint tickled the ball to the long leg boundary to seal a victory against the odds.
Nomads lingered for some time in the evening sunshine, enjoying jugs of beer provided by an overjoyed captain Kandampully. Deal was still to be heard debating his LBW decision.
A select few Nomads then repaired to the Saffron Curry House in Blackheath village to continue the celebrations.
