Hamilton & Brockton sink the Buccaneers
After a controversial draw in the 2019 edition of this fixture, which was abandoned due to rain with Nomads needing only 10 to win, Nomads were concerned by a showery weather forecast. In the event, despite a bit of drizzle during the first innings, rain did not stop play, allowing Nomads to complete a comfortable victory by 5 wickets. Buccaneers had won the toss and elected to take first use of a rather stodgy, two paced Ascott Park wicket, seeking to take advantage of Nomads having only 10 players at the start. However, they had reckoned without James Hamilton, as ‘the Labrador’ bounded in up the hill to tear apart the Buccaneers top order – snicking off Kalidasan, having Leech held at square leg by the late-comer Vithlani, and uprooting Angus Berry’s poles. Figures of 3/29 did not fully reflect a fine spell of bowling. At 27/3, Buccaneers were in some strife, which was only accentuated by the introduction of Finchley leg-spinner Yuvresh Malhotra, who applied pressure with his accuracy and deception. Sajjad Shawl (2/31) took advantage with a double strike, knocking over Milne and Machin in short order, and when Malhotra (9 overs, 1/12) dismissed Buccaneers opener Marsh, their best bat on the day by some distance, Nomads were well on top at 70/6. Tom Brockton changed the bowling, which allowed the Buccaneers tail a chance to recover the situation. However, any comeback was stymied by Sumant Bahl (2/15), who took the 8th and 9th wickets in two balls, with an extraordinary caught and bowled immediately followed by trapping the opposition skipper Will Metcalfe LBW for a golden duck. A last wicket partnership of 25 took the Buccaneers to 130 - something to bowl at. After a break for picnic teas, Nomads immediately suffered a setback as Chetan Malhotra was castled by Metcalfe for none. Left-hander Annas Faheem (11) formed a nuggety partnership with skipper Tom Brockton, who was in good touch both off his legs and but neither Ralphs nor Vithlani was able to make it into double-figures, and at 68-4, the match was in the balance. Enter Yuvresh Malhotra, who joined Brockton in the middle and took the game to Buccaneers with some lovely stroke-making over mid-off and extra cover, backed by aggressive running between the wickets. The run rate quickened appreciably as Yuvresh hurried Nomads towards the target, seeing Brockton safely past his 50, and it was a real disappointment when he was caught and bowled for 35 from a rank Hobbs long-hop which stayed low. Fittingly, strike bowler James Hamilton (8*) joined Tom Brockton (60*) to administer the last rites, seeing Nomads home by five wickets, to the delight of the watching President, and match-manager Vic Kandampully, side-lined with a calf strain but supporting the XI with a cool box full of beers. The chase had been accomplished in just over 34 overs, and without requiring Chris Royals or in-form hitter Sajjad Shawl. Nomads celebrated, and Buccaneers licked their wounds, in a social (yet socially-distanced!) manner over beers at the ground and at the nearby Ship Inn.
