Nomads too strong for youthful Ramblers

Nomads ran out winners by 6 wickets in a low scoring contestat Upper Club. With poor weather theprevious 3 days the sides were greeted by blue skies and pleasant early summersunshine. Brockton won the toss and inserted the Ramblers on a used wicketwhich on first glance felt a little soft underfoot.Caunt and Shawl took the new cherry and Caunt was rewardedimmediately as the hapless Ramblers opener nearly chopped on first ball and then lobbed back the easiest caught and bowl off the second ball of the day. Caunt was unnerving inhis accuracy and full deserved his 3 wickets, Shawl on the other hand was not at his best and was replaced by slow left armer Mark Firth.

On a slow, and slightly spitting “turner” Firth was a real handful and on the stroke of lunch Ramblers had descended to 82-6 from 32overs, Firth and Caunt with 3 scalps a-piece. Lunch was an enjoyable affair, tasty lasagne on offer plus a bottle or two from Professor Page who had raised M&S the previous day to obtain some “Cabinet Sauvignon”. The Ramblers remained stoic in the face of the offer of alcohol at lunchtime, the Nomads got stuck in.

The afternoon session started positively for the Nomads, Bill Johnson taking a wicket with his first ball and although Ash Arora took abit of tap from the Ramblers no7 he did exact some modicum of revenge with awicket of his own. Professor Page was introduced into the attack and he bowled accurately, taking 2 wickets, one courtesy of a real hack from the Ramblers batter. The other finished the innings as Cricketer Cup winner Fred Fox was trapped LBW (given by Chris Horne no less). Ramblers bundled out for 115 injust over 40 overs. The feeling was that although this was clearly not an easywicket to time the ball easily on the Ramblers had been guilty of not occupying the crease for a sufficient time before attempting to play their shots. 175 would have been perhaps more of a par score.

A quick turn around and a quick wicket for the Ramblers, Kandampully back in the hutch for 0, bowled neck and crop by the impressive Ramblers new ball bowler. Farrell and Johnson progressed the score to 40 when Johnson was adjudged LBW off the bowling of Fox. Front foot, big stride, turning pitch, the former Durham cricketer was less than happy. Nomads in the ascendancy but on the stroke of tea Ben Ralphs feathered a catch through to the keeper off an innocuous delivery and had to drag himself back to the pavilion.

At the other end Kie Farrell was looking calm and collected as he accumulated and put away the occasional loose ball, his innings was proving a very valuable one in this low scoring match. However the Nomads were now 64-3, which soon became 69-4 when keeper Bradley was also victim of the umpires finger, playing all round a straight delivery. Nomads now 4 down but with bucket  loads of batting left in the hutch (Ormiston, Brockton, Arora, Shawl,Caunt).

In the event the Nomads knocked off the runs for the loss of no further wickets and no further incident. Experienced  Ross Ormiston showed how to apply oneself on a slow, low wicket and in partnership with Farrell got the Nomads over the line with 10 mins remaining before the start of the 20 overs. Farrell a robust 46* was the innings of the day. Farrell deserved a fifty but with Ramblers conceding 25 extras in a low scoring game his opportunity  for runs off the bat became restricted.

A relatively early finish meant a beer or three in the Royal Stag, a pretty pub located a mile or so from the ground in Datchet. Former Middlesex keeper/opening bat and general all round good guy Nigel “Roscoe” Ross joined the Nomads for a glass of vino, and a number of the Ramblers accepted the invite for a post cricket pint in the early evening sunshine.

Our thanks to Michael Blumberg for scoring and Chris Horne for being one of the two officiating umpires on the day. His “fee” of a large glass of red at the close of play was well received. We wish the Ramblers well for their 2019 Cricketer Cup campaign and again for the annual invite to play at Upper Club.
