Alex & James’ tons create a target far beyond Headley’s capacity

This was the second game of the weekend when a rather powerful Nomads side was met with a weak opposition which apart from the skipper was devoid of all their top batsmen and bowlers. in view of the anticipated time lost searching for balls a 35/35 overs game was agreed.

Sanjay and Abhinav opened with a flurry of boundaries before Abhinav was defeated by the bounce and instead of guiding the ball for a 3rd man four guided it to wide slip. Then Sanjay miscued and Nomads were 41-2. James Hamilton and Alex Hall then added 177 whereupon Alex retired on reaching his maiden century. Tom Marriage joined James and these two added 40 whereupon James retired on reaching his second Nomads Ton. This was the 23rd Nomads century of the season. Tom fell for 20 at 284 leaving Nilesh and Jeremy briefly at the crease. Nomads finished on 287 from 35 overs.

Following a good Tea it began to drizzle and did so off and on thereafter for quite a while. Headley’s response did not start well and William Marriage bowled Headley’s opener Ketan first ball. Calvert and Barker added a few boundaries and Madhav threatened but Headley suffered a mid order collapse, 4 wickets for 10 runs, 6-78.

Headley’s skipper had opened the bowling removing Abhinav then at drinks took the gloves and caught out Tom Marriage. As a result he batted down the order. He and the diminutive Rhys Mathias added 36 before Young Rhys was caught behind off Fayaz,7-114. The skipper Dan Greayer-Smith on 35 miscued and was caught in the deep by Sanjay off Wm Marriage, 8-116. Fayaz Ahmed removed 10 and 11 for ducks so the innings closed at 123 off 24 overs. In all Headley batsmen recorded five ducks ! In retrospect for Headley to mount a decent chase Dan G-S should have batted much higher. The wickets were shared between William, Vamsi, Preetinder and Fayaz.

So another early finish and but a single beer for most Nomads. We were pleased to greet Headley’s esteemed President of many years Sir Michael Pickard and Lady Jane Pickard. Sir Michael has barely missed a Nomads match as player or spectator for some 54 years. Also Nomads were supported by the family of Yasmin Sinclair, young James’s partner.

It was alleged after the game that this match was the only one at Headley this season in which both innings used but one ball, a testament to the success of the ball hunters who searched in the undergrowth across the B2033 road for the majority of the11 six hits.
