Alex Hall catch wins a close match for Nomads
What a match! With three overs to go Barnes Common required twenty runs to win and the last pair number 11 and top scorer Fahad had already added 21. A creaky William Marriage started with a wide then number 11 Abdullah struck a four and a single, Fahad hit 2 making it 8 off the over, two dot balls and Fahad swung mightily but miscued, a steepler of a catch. Alex Hall rushed in from deep cover dived and took the catch to great acclamation from the rest of the Nomads players. Nomads had won by 11 runs with two overs to go.
It was a fine morning when everyone arrived though it clouded over later on. Pawan Malik won the toss and elected to bat. Despite a flurry of boundary fours our mighty top order were gone for 58 and Alex Hall fell soon after to a terrific catch by Sanjay Beri. Skipper Pawan who was strokeless the day before at Northwood now brought all his experience to bear to compile 46 from 60 balls and the lower order fired with three twenty plus so we reached a respectable total or 220-9 off 40 overs.
Following a good Tea Viren Patel and Wm Marriage removed the openers for 12. Wickets continued to fall amidst a steady flow of boundaries and number 6 Fahad prevailed with the score at 156-8 off 29 overs. Two late stands with Fahad took the score to 180-9 and then 209 before Fahad miscued and Alex took the catch. Fahad had scored 77 by far the top score on what everyone considered a very ‘sporty’ pitch.
There were a lot of extras in this match,75 in all! including 36 wides.!!
In that this was an indifferent pitch and for the most part the bowling was good the batsmen did well to amass 449 runs off 78.5 overs.
A few of us repaired to the Coach and Horses in Barnes to mull over the day’s events before departing home.
