Nomads prevail in tight finish

An uncharacteristically youthful Nomads XI took the field at Montenotte, with no fewer than 5 players who would have been legally unable to purchase a jug of lager if the requirement had arisen, and with the novelty of two young lady cricketers, Artemis Downer and Winnie Jewell. Veteran Chris Page raised his hat, his glass, and the average age of the side to 27. Meanwhile, Montenotte had bolstered their XI with several players from Highgate CC 1s and 2s, so looked a more capable and youthful outfit than in some past years.

Brockton won the toss and decided to insert Montenotte “to stop them playing for a draw”, which intent was immediately assisted by Chakravarty removing the notoriously obdurate Montenotte regular Fletcher for 1. Young thruster Danny Blyghton, from Highgate 1s, played stylishly and well in company with Khan before each succumbed to the wiles of Chris Page. When Blyghton fell for 49 via a good running catch at long-on, Montenotte were 103/4.

This allowed Brockton to bring on both lady cricketers to bowl in tandem. Each bowled tidily, but Winnie Jewell, the Middlesex u13s girls captain, took the honours by dismissing Montenotte’s #5 and #6, including the champagne moment of the day - a brutal nip-backer to Dar that left the Montenotte man’s jaw at shin height, and his middle stump at a jaunty angle.

From 166/8, Brockton would have hoped to bowl Montenotte out, but Eccleston and Ashan took Montenotte up to 200/8 declared, from 45 overs. Disciplined bowling and regular wickets had won Nomads a favourable declaration.

With the bat, young Alfie Jewell opened up with Kandampully. After a watchful first over, the pair got stuck into the other opener, Columbus, whose bowling explored various lines and lengths en route to figure of 0-36 from 3 overs. This success prompted Jewell to launch an enthusiastic assault on left arm seamer Tom Newell, who was Highgate 1s top wicket taker for 2022. Newell looked more than a little irked to be picked up, repeatedly and beautifully, to the leg-side boundary by a 14 year old, but got his revenge as Alfie tried one lofted shot too many and fell for a rapid 32.

Despite the immediate loss of Ralphs, and subsequently Kiritharan, Kandampully compiled a careful 50 in the company of youngsters Kaul and Downer, before being unfortunately run-out to make it 137/5.
64 still needed. Brockton downed his San Miguel and was quickly into his stride, putting on 25 with Butcher (2) to take the score to 175/7 before he was fired out LBW by umpire Derek Manners.

Still 25 wanted, with Winnie Jewell at the wicket alongside veteran Chris Page. Enough overs left to finish the game either way. At one end, Newell was now charging in - 4 wickets under his belt, looking to grab a fifth in the late-summer gloaming. At the other, quality spin from Ashan, who was going at only 2 an over. Jewell and Page faced down the speedster bravely and watched the spinner carefully, stealing runs wherever possible, until finally Nomads were within touching distance. At which point, Page cantered down the wicket to the off-spinner and carted him cleanly over midwicket for four to finish the game, to the cheers of the Nomads assembled on the boundary edge. Pagey finished 12* (21) and Jewell ended up with  7*(21).

A exciting game and a very creditable win with an inexperienced group against a decent Montenotte side.
Each of the 5 Colts in the side genuinely contributed to helping to win the game: no passengers these, but useful young cricketers. We look forward to seeing more of them.
