Two Toms & Jemile take Nomads to overwhelming win

Nomads made it 3 wins from 3 matches at Leigh on Sea Cricket Club as part of their 2023 cricket week. Despite a long trip for most players (train and car) the Nomads assembled in good time for a pre-match pint before the toss.
Leigh on Sea won the toss and bizarrely elected to bat on a wicket that had fallen victim of a heavy shower around 40 minutes before the scheduled start of play and despite the best efforts of the home side rain had definitely seeped through the covers.
With new ball in hand Hamilton & Shawl took advantage of these favourable conditions to reduce the home side to the perilous position of 14-3 from 10 overs.  Shawl 5-5-0-2 in his opening spell demonstrated the kind of control with the new ball that has made him such a valuable weapon for Nomads over the past 10 seasons. He ended with figures of 2-20 from 10 excellent overs.
Paul Fielding joined in the act dismissing Attwood (who had scored 80 the day before), Balkwill doing the rest behind the stumps & despite taking some “long handle” from burly South African Mike Reed (61) the home side were struggling, 105-5 at lunch from 35 overs.  This include the prize wicket of former Essex cricketer Dean Waller, caught behind by the returning Shawl on the stroke of lunch.
Lunch, as always is the highlight of the day at Leigh on Sea CC and his season it again did not disappoint. A fantastic Durban Curry, accompanied with naan, rice and chutney. Delicious.
With full bellies Nomads re-took the field after the 1hour lunch interval.  No doubt after 4 helpings Tom Balkwill was feeling a little lethargic, but his drop was something from the comedy locker. However, this meant we were to experience one of the wickets of the season just a couple of balls later.  A firm drive from Sibley was expertly “parried” by old stager Page & Josh Daniels flung himself forward at mid-off to take a fantastic catch. Sibley on his way for 0.
To add insult to injury Josh Daniels then cleaned up his dad, Tim for 1 & then repeated the dose to Riley.  All this time talented young cricketer Alfie Adams had been grafting away, he brought up his 50 with a beautiful clip off his pads for 4 off Daniels and was last man out for 62 from 157 balls.  Some of his elder counterparts should take note of his technique and eagerness to bat “time”.
Leigh on Sea bundled out for 177 just shy of 50 overs. Sajjad Shawl & Chris Royals were the pick of the Nomads bowlers, Royals with 2-35 from 12 accurate overs.
Jemile Al-Darraji & Tom Brockton opened up for the Nomads with the region of 45 over left in the game, the two experienced Hertfordshire cricketers looking to get the visitors off to a positive start with Reed & Riley taking the new ball for the home side. The wicket had definitely flattened out, and the pair seemed determined to put together a good opening stand.
They did, with good effect adding 140 before Al-Darraji retired for a well crafted 69.  Brockton was joined by Chingford overseas Aussie Tom Balkwill who was quickly into his stride striking 3 maximum’s in his 37 off just 19 balls. Brockton a typically stoic 62* from 82 balls.  Nomads running out winners by 9 wickets with only 4 overs gone in the final 20.
John Olufawo suffered a bout of “pad rash” at number 4 and quickly exited after the game. However, he would make amends the following day at Beckenham CC.  Peter Price, at 5 was in much more jovial form after the game & Sajjad bought a couple of jugs by way of an apology for mis-judging the start of play after lunch.
Our thanks to Tim & Amy Daniels (& Leigh Brockton) for the fantastic Durban curry as well as Stuart Colgate for officiating (and also working behind the bar as soon as the game concluded). We wish Leigh on Sea all the very best for the remainder of the 2023 season
