Nomads triumph by 10 wickets

Nomads travelled in good spirits to SW London to be hosted by Barnes CC, which also marked Nick Stevenson's birthday. Blue skies, 30 degrees & a bumper BBQ after the game, what more could a wandering side ask for!
Brockton & Foulds effectively tossed up in the pub before the game so Barnes would be invited to bat, with a maximum of 45 overs allocated for their innings. An 85 over game was agreed under the watchful eye of Stevenson.
Nomads bowling stocks were depleted by the news that the jovial Keith Juriansz was suffering from "policeman's heel" & could not bowl so the equally veteran David MacVicor was entrusted with the new nut along with Beddington's Ben Butcher.
The pair bowled miserly, and MacVicor was rewarded with the wicket of Laurie Cadle. Butcher would take 3 scalps, including Barnes luminaries Alder & Harwood in a superb spell of darty off breaks.
Barnes slumped to 60-4 & their efforts were not helped when Campbell went in the calf and had to retire hurt, we wish him a speedy recovery from what looked like a season ending injury. He would take no further part in proceedings but gallantly remained for post cricket beers.
Professor Page had a couple of youngsters in his sights, and cashed in with 3 "burgled" scalps, Owen Marshall bowling nicely from the other end but with no reward.
Two run outs, courtesy of Brockton & MacLeod did not help the home side, Nomads Nikhil Malik (now playing his league cricket at Barnes CC) selling one of his partners up the proverbial garden path with a suicidal single.
Malik ploughed a lone furrow ending with 40* but on a decent enough wicket, Barnes were bundled out for 121, which the Nomads felt was about 121 runs under par !
During the tea beak & amazing & equally bizarre contra ton occured between two Russian chess players (Barnes Sports Club hosts a chess competition on a Wednesday) one of which accused the other of cheating ! The Nomads looked on with a mizture of amusement & bemusement !
Under an azure sky & searing heat, two Tom's opened the Nomads innings, MacLeod & Brockton. And in 19.2 overs they had overhauled the Barnes total with no wickets lost.
MacLeod was lucky to escape a shell at 1st slip, skipper Foulds putting down a regulation chance off Rich Craig in the 3rd over. Brockton also survived, albeit a much more difficult chance, James Alder the culprit at gully.
However the total was knocked off with consumate ease. Both players passed 50 in their efforts & MacLeod supplied the Coup De Grasse by dispatching Harwood over long on to win the game with many overs to spare.
The star of the show was now the BBQ, hosted by Nick Stevenson & cooked perfectly by Jarrod Schmid, a bowler of fearsome pace for Barnes CC in the past. All 22 players lingering long in the summer sunshine, enjoying camaraderie & a few cold beverages.
Barnes CC, licking their wounds after a chastening 10 wicket loss, however they were more than gracious in defeat.
We thank the ever jovial Nick Stevenson for hosting both XIs as well as The Times cricket correspondent Elizabeth Ammon for scoring.
Interested spectators included Michael Blumberg, James Drake-Brockman & Chris "Gas" Chambers.
We wish Barnes CC all the best for the remainder of their 2022 league season, especially as they have been promoted back into Div1 of the Middlesex County League.
