Debutant Jack & Skipper Brockers take Nomads to victory

Nomads recorded an impressive 5 wicket win vs a strong Beckenham side as part of their 2023 cricket week. With the threat of showers later in the day, umpire Stevenson ran a “tight ship” urging both sides to get through the overs at a decent lick. David MacVicor won the toss and elected to bat first on what looked like a fantastic wicket. Indeed, Finn Bryan got off to a flier dispatching James Hamilton for 4 off the first two balls of the game. James’ new ball partner was Jack Ellis who roared in bowling at a good pace. He fully deserved his two wickets, taking the prize scalps of Bryan (24) and Pakistan “A” cricketer Khan who is Beckenham’s overseas pro for the 2023 season. He has scored 13 first class hundreds, no less. Keeping it in the family, Duncan Ellis pouched the catch. Bekenham were 40-3 but wicket keeper Roberts & “Mahi” added a partnership of 116 in good time. Ex Blackheath 1st XI cricketer Mahi launching Ben Butcher for a massive 6 into the tennis courts. However, both were to perish to old stager Chris Page. However, this brought in Beckenham’s 2nd XI overseas pro to the crease who promptly reverse swept Page for 6 (and then deposited one of his flighted deliveries onto the pack portion of the roof of the Beckenham pavilion!) Butler smashed 53* in 23 balls before MacVicor called in his troops on 235-5. Jack Ellis (2-38) the pick of the Nomads bowlers. Nomads would receive in the region of 42 overs to chase this total & their start was one of aggression and timing as Tom Balkwill took an amazing liking to the bowling of Izzy Steet dispatching all 4 balls of her first over to the cover boundary. Balkwill and experienced campaigner John Olufawo added 83 in just 10 overs. However, MacVicor sensibly removed Steet & Colson from the attack and Mahi’s 2nd ball knocked back Balkwill’s off stump for 44 & Khan’s first ball dismissed Olufawo (37). The pair had got Nomads off to a very fast start but now the two “trump cards” were wheeling away in tandem. Kandampully played a poor shot to be taken at gully & then after promising starts Ellis & Hamilton both also perished to the Pakistan “A” cricketer. Nomads had slumped (albeit in the face of high class bowing) from 83-0 to 154-5. However, Debutant Jack McCrossan was looking in fine form, rotating the strike and putting away the occasional bad ball with consummate ease. Nomads Club Captain entered and joined McCrossan with Mahi and Khan now in full flow. After a watchful start the pair forged a partnership of 84 in 11 overs to get the visitors over the line. A Mahi beamer incensed the Nomads skipper who responded by hitting Mahi for 4 boundaries in an over as the partnership developed. The introduction of MacVicor & Butler did not stem the flow of runs, although MacVicor shelled McCrossan when on 61 (by his own admission an absolute dolly). McCrossan 77* from 70 balls and Brockton 44* from 34 balls. Nomads running out winner by 5 wickets with 6 overs remaining. 15 minutes after the close of play the heavens opened & it rained with hostility well into the wee hours of the next morning. Many drinks were sunk back in the Beckenham bar, McCrossan generously bought a jug for his unbeaten 77 & despite suffering a bout of cramp & having to be stretched out by the burly Kandampully, Brockton, Butcher & the afore mentioned Kandampully were last seen leaving the Beckenham bar well after 10:30pm. Our thanks to David MacVicor, Jason Bilimoria (Beckenham match manager) & the Beckenham team for an enjoyable day. We wish them all the best for the remainder of the 2023 league season..
