Nomads Bowlers’ Success secures the Cup.

The Nomads, were honoured to be invited yet again under the stewardship of birthday boy Vic Kandampully to compete for the George Howlett Trophy for the 2nd year . Nomads ran out winners vs Blackheath at the rectory ground on BH Monday by the considerable margin of 102 runs. The 2024 encounter was rained off after some 20 overs when a huge deluge engulfed the entire Blackheath area).
Kandampully won the toss and he strode out to bat with club captain Tom Brockton. The pair added 25 before Kandampully was snaffled at first slip & Alfie Gardner was soon to follow, bowled by the impressive Hassan Khokar who had everyone in trouble with his flighted off-spin. At the other end Antunes was charging in with gusto & was clearly up for the ensuing battle. Brockton found support from the burly ex Worcester & Cornwall cricketer Mark Richards and the pair advanced the score into the 70s before the “stoppy” nature of the pitch on occasions accounted for Richards (and Harry Kandampully) as both played shots & lobbed catches to the gleeful ring field.
Lunch taken (and what a lunch) with the game very much in the balance. A long and sumptuous lunch followed with delicious lasagna, Shepherd’s Pie & no less than three pudding options (plus cheese and port), isn’t this what wandering cricket is all about !
Despite Brockton (68), Hamilton (30) and Moore (20) all digging in, the Nomads total seemed a little under-par, until an assertive partnership between Devam Shah and keeper Kyle Bradley (with girlfriend looking on) got the visitors to 227. Both cricketers looking in good touch, Bradley supplying the coup de grasse with a massive straight 6, much to the delight of the Nomads players on the Blackheath CC balcony.
Blackheath would have in the region of 42 overs to chase this total, but Nomads had a youthful and well balanced attack with no less than 7 front line bowlers at captain Kandampully’s disposal.
Chalk and cheese with the new ball, Wagner fan William Marriage from one end and Beddington’s “chippy” Joe Ridley from the other. Both were excellent with the new ball and claimed 3 wickets between them (one courtesy of a cracking catch from Alfie Gardner, who flung himself full length at cover on the stroke of tea). Nomads definitely in the ascendancy, and so after the tea break (no, not more food Vic!) this continued as former Blackheath cricketer Ben Butcher turned the screw with a spell of classic off-spin. Devam Shah provided very accurate support, but Blackheath had a long batting order and 2s skipper Holmes was looking in good touch.
Kandampully turned to young Hornsey cricketer Charlie Moore and although his leg-breaks were somewhat erratic, he did claim three wickets (including Holmes) as Nomads rain though the Blackheath like a knife through Vic’s chocolate birthday cake (which was delicious by the way, thanks Vic). “Safe hands” James Hamilton claimed two catches on the boundary as Nomads dismissed the home side with 8 overs remaining and falling some 102 runs short.
Back to the sanctity of the warm pavilion, for social conversations, more drinks and renewing of friendships (both in the showers and on the pool table). The George Howlett Trophy was presented to Club President Michael Blumberg who, as always, spoke eloquently and thanked the home side (and Victor) for their hospitality and re-emphasised the importance of good mental health, on and off the cricket field.
Interested spectators were many, most importantly George’s parents, but also notably Graham and Caroline Hamilton, Michael Blumberg, Mrs Kandampully, Leigh, Dev, Kush, The Gardner Clan, The Moore family & a friend of Ben Butcher’s who seemed hell bent on drinking his own body weight in beer !
