Jack Massey blitz takes Nomads to swift victory
The Nomads now back to winning ways and a convincing 6 wicket defeat of Hurlingham, made it 5 wins on the bounce. The XI were in buoyant mood, celebrating the birthday of “Mr Cricket” himself, the one and only Michael Blumberg. The Nomads would toast Michael’s 80th after the game, fittingly with Champagne, but for now on with the cricket.
The game started (or more accurately did not start) in rather bizarre circumstances, with a Hurlingham member’s family fun fair on the ground the day before the Nomads arrived to see half of the rides still erected and the start was delayed by some 45 minutes. Indeed, were it not for the Nomads and HCC rolling up their sleeves the game may not have started at all.
Sy Razvi of Hurlingham won the toss and elected to bat. James Hamilton and the ever-green Pavan Malik taking the new nut for the Nomads. Both were in good form, Malik finding the edge off the first ball of the game and his 8 overs would yield only 18 runs and two wickets in the bank for Nomads. Hamilton took an early scalp too and returned at the death to very impressive effect. However, Hurlingham were making reasonable progress, targeting the shorter of the two boundaries to good effect.
The game changed with the introduction of Beddington’s Ben Butcher who wheeled away with his accurate off-breaks on a helpful surface. His 3-21 from 8 overs were the pick of the figures from a Nomads perspective, but his spell was not without controversy. A snick, a catch claimed but the batsman, Cripps stood his ground. Umpire Stevenson raised the finger but Cripps was unmoved and made his displeasure known. Unbelievably he was reprieved and went onto score 71 (the Nomads noted his 50 was not clapped by a single person in either XI).
At the other end Matthew Bazeley was battling away, and with a few swats and swishes he also made 50 before being one of James Hamilton’s 3 victims. With 8 overs left Hurlingham were seemingly well enough placed on 150-4, but some impressive death bowling from Sanjay Beri and James Hamilton and two wickets in two balls from Ben Butcher would mean only 19 runs were scored from the final 8 overs and 6 wickets lost. Meaning the home side had been bundled out for 169, two balls short of the 40 over limit.
Granted the wicket was hardly a “road” but the feeling in the Nomads camp was that this was a somewhat paltry total and around 50 runs below par.
Skipper Brockton opted to put out a top order to win the game, and win it quickly. Dashing batsmen in the top 5 – Kandampully, Massey, DeBahl, Richards & Beri (with the Nomads captain at 6 and Pav Malik at 7). Indeed, Nomads had depth in batting with Ralphs, Dummer & Hamilton, as low as no 10. By his own admission, Ben Butcher was the only “tailender” in the Nomads ranks.
Massey did not disappoint, dispatching Hurlingham’s star bowling George Brooksbank for back to back boundaries in the first over. After 3 overs Nomads were 25-0 with Massey clearly enjoying pace on the ball. The dismissals of Kandampully for 11 and DeBahl for 4 did not slow the rate, Massey reaching 50 in the 12th over with a massive 6 which went onto the orangery roof of the Hurlingham Club. Mark Richards provided good support, despite a gout-riddled bottom hand (how ???) & he carved 33* from just 21 balls.
Massey, with his century in sight, and a very despondent Hurlingham XI now being sapped by the evening sunshine, decided to try to 1. Switch hit Harry Beckwith and then 2. Charge down the track at him. Sadly the latter would be his downfall and he was stumped for 93. His innings was full of power, and no little skill, facing just 57 balls, striking 16 4s and 3 massive 6s.
Sanjay Beri strode to the wicket and was unlucky to receive an absolute beauty from Ben Vail, his off stump quite literally shattered (a new one had to be retrieved from the pavilion). Richards and Brockton knocked off the remaining 12 runs, Richards ending the game with a crisply timed short arm pull for 4 and Nomads ran out winners with 21.1 overs remaining scoring chasing down the 169 total in 18.5 overs at a scoring rate of just over 9 runs per over.
Hurlingham graciously, and correctly, laid on a couple of jugs of Pimms & Mahou beer for the Nomads and the remaining Hurlingham players.
Supporting spectators included Hugo & Susie Morris, Lucy Beri, Sam Richards, Peter Price, Leigh Brockton, Geoff, Carol & Peter Stork, Annette Tiberghien,Nick Hawks,Malcolm Moss as well as Chris Page who bemoaned his non-selection for this fixture to anyone who would listen.
