Bonneywell and Page bewilder Northwood’s batsmen

Nomads made the trip to Northwood CC, on the Middlesex Hertfordshire border to play their regular cricket week fixture. Northwood is a pretty “old fashioned” club who have strong values and a stronger cricket week, boasting 5 well run all-day fixtures.  Nomads won the toss and batted first. Former Hertfordshire league cricketers Tom Brockton & Jemile Al-Darraji opened up for the visitors, but despite two absolutely sumptuous drives Al-Darraji was suckered into an ill-advised pull shot and Middlesex 50s cricketer Nick Kenny celebrated the prized wicket as the top edge was successfully pouched.
Brockton found strong support from John Olufawo who looked in sparkling form. The pair added 134 in 23 overs but Brockton was dismissed on the stroke of lunch for 65 (and then Kandke followed swiftly after). However, Nomads were well placed at 178-3. An enjoyable lunch followed, & a glass of port or two.  Northwood captain of the day “Ackers” Rana spoke eloquently about the club & cricket week at NCC.  This was responded to by the duo of Blumberg & Brockton.
Nomads looked to accelerate after lunch, Olufawo out for 64 from only 58 balls & further damage was done by Yash Patel (34), Nirav Jariwala (30) & James Hamilton (32*). This allowed Nomads to declare on 297-8.Nomads would bowl in the region of 45 overs back at Northwood.
Northwood started brightly, aided by some wayward new ball bowling by Shaam Chakravarty, but he did claim the scalp of Northwood stalwart Nigel Hussey who unfortunately hit a low full toss to cover.  However, Northwood were well placed at 43-1 when Rob Bonnywell was introduced into the attack. He was quickly into his stride, knocking over Tucker in his first over.  After a miserly opening spell from Hamilton, the old stager Chris Page took centre stage (and took 4 wickets).  In conjunction with Bonnywell they cast a spell over the Northwood middle order, Dhanuka (St Albans CC) the only player to look comfortable against Bonnywell’s guile & Page’s flighted filth.
Bonneywell ended with a richly deserved 5 wicket haul, & Page ended the game when he had Nick Kenny caught at mid on. Northwood bundled out for a disappointing 134 with 15 overs of the 20 remaining.  An early finish did mean both sides could enjoy the early summer evening sunshine, and Rob’s jug of beer to celebrate his “Michelle”.  As always an enjoyable day at Northwood CC, a club that does thing the right way.
Our thanks to umpire Nick Stevenson, scorers Alan Kay (Pinner CC) and Vic Devers as well as BBQ master Adam Bailey & Sandra Pitt who provided a delicious lunch.  Interested spectators included Ranjit Latchman, Nomads supremo Michael Blumberg, who gave a fantastic speech at lunchtime, Mike Kirman, Iggy Chowdhury, Keith Knowles, Keith Watson & former Surrey wicket keeper Neil Sargeant
