Nomads win by a whisker

Nomads made their annual late summer trip to the picturesque Master Park to take on Oxted & Limpsfield. We were delighted to receive a warm welcome from the Oxted veteran Mike “Mirrors” Adamson, who was once again captaining the home side after a year’s hiatus.   Due to various factors affecting availability, match manager Ben Butcher was unable to compose a Nomads XI. In consultation with Vic Kandampully, it was decided that the match would be a “joint venture” with Blackheath CC, who had a surplus of willing and able players for their scheduled Bank Holiday fixture.  An 85 over match was agreed with the hosts, batting first, able to bat up to 45 overs.   What followed was an inconsistent bowling display, as the home side used their full allocation to end on 230-9. Highlights included: an ever-improving opening spell from Blackheath youngster Alex Jorgensen, which accounted for Mirrors; swift spells of bowling from Marcus Windsor, whose action was likened to Graham Dilley and Carl Rackemann by learned observers; and a canny spell of death bowling from the giant 16-year-old Alex Bush. However, there was also loose deliveries, ragged pieces of fielding and several dropped catches, some easier than others.   With 40 overs to chase the total, Nomads would require a robust start, and this was provided by club captain Tom Brockton and languid Australian southpaw Sam Denlay, following the early loss of Peter Price. Denlay would depart for 28, and entertaining cameos then followed from M. Windsor and Bush to keep the Nomads up with the required run rate. However, the loss of Brockton for 41, the highest individual score of the innings, caught behind from the bowling of Oxted’s veteran off-break bowler Nick Emmins, left the Nomads 141-5. It was at this point that ex First-Class cricketer Jason Windsor, and father of Marcus, combined with the jovial wicket keeper Richard Eldridge to great effect.   Eldridge, a sound technician at his local place of worship, had not enjoyed a profitable day behind the stumps, but would make amends here with a crucial innings in a partnership of 76 with J. Windsor. Indeed, Eldridge is a regular patron at The Hope public house in Carshalton, which has recently won its sixth CAMRA Greater London Pub of the Year Award. Eldridge is also known to turn out for the pub’s occasional cricket team and was rather under the weather following a post-game session the previous day; The Hope coming second best to fierce rivals The Traf.   J. Windsor and Eldridge took the Nomads to the jaws of victory at 217-5, but the dismissal of Windsor precipitated a remarkable collapse of 4 wickets for 7 runs, the last of these being Eldridge run out from the first ball of the penultimate over: a direct hit from Oxted’s popular opening batsman Wardley sparking joyous celebrations from the hosts in the gathering gloom. Suddenly Oxted were favourites, with only captain Butcher and veteran Chris Page standing between them and their first victory over the Nomads for some years. Two singles were garnered from the next 4 balls of the penultimate over, before Butcher whipped a leg stump half volley to the mid-wicket fence to tie the scores. Four dot balls followed in the final over, before Page steered a low full toss into the leg side to seal victory for the Nomads in a thrilling game.   Both sides repaired to the sanctity of the Oxted pavilion, where Wardley had prepared a gratis supper of hot dogs for all to enjoy. Many libations were sunk as both sides picked over the bones of an enthralling contest, and discussed their respective seasons, and it was some hours before the final stragglers wended their way home.   Interested spectators included the injured Kandampully, whose efforts had ensured that the fixture could be played, and erstwhile opening batsman Kie Farrell, threatening a comeback following self-imposed retirement. Our gratitude goes to the ever-jovial Nick Stevenson for officiating alongside the more subdued Nigel, the Oxted umpire.   We look forward to this fixture producing more good cricket and sociability for many seasons to come.
