Vic and Neil turn the tide
On another scorcher of a day Nomads retained the George Howlett Cup with a hard-fought draw at the Rectory, in a match that never quite escaped the gravitational pull of caution.
Blackheath won the toss and batted first, but were made to work hard for their runs throughout. Hassan Khokhar took 3/63 and Yasin Mohammed bowled a useful spell of 2/27, but much of the pressure was built by the economical bowling of Karnik, Hamilton and Butcher. They gave little away, forced Blackheath to manufacture scoring options, and created the conditions for wickets to fall at the other end. After Blackheath slipped to 17/2, Oliver Burgess steadied things with 35, before Rez Karim played the main innings of the Blackheath effort, making 44 from 55 balls. Ben Rose added a useful 22, and Dan Holmes provided late impetus with an unbeaten 31 from 25 balls.
Blackheath eventually declared on 203/9 after 50.4 overs, leaving Nomads only 32 overs to chase 204. That was always a somewhat demanding equation, and at tea, the captains and umpires agreed to add another 40 minutes, extending the Nomads innings to a possible 40 overs.
The extended chase began dramatically enough, thanks to an excellent new-ball spell from Luc McCaffrey, who removed three of the top order and gave Blackheath immediate hope. Mahi Mahfazul then picked up two more, and when Jack Thomson bowled Khokhar, Nomads had fallen to 44/7. At that stage, Blackheath had given themselves a real chance of forcing a win.
However, the final push never quite materialised. With attacking fields and close catchers perhaps the order of the day, Vic Kandampully and Neil Karnik were instead able to settle into a careful partnership against a ring field. Kandampully batted cautiously for 62* from 75 balls, and benefited from some generous change bowling, while Karnik made a determined 26* from 55, and the pair gradually removed any realistic prospect of a result.
Nomads reached 152/7 before the sides shook hands with four overs still available. Nomads were relieved to secure the draw from 44/7, and repaired to the bar for jugs to celebrate the retention of the George Howlett Cup. However, the team could not help but reflect that an earlier declaration, or a little more urgency once Nomads were seven down, might have made for a more compelling finish.
Despite being a day early remaining Nomads and supporters gave a rousing rendition of ‘Happy Birthday Victor’
