Eighth wicket partnership thwarts Nomads ambition
Nomads retained bragging rights against the Gaieties at Blackheath CC, coming away with much the better half of a draw.
Nomads elected to bat on winning the toss. This proved to be a shrewd choice as the Gaieties were not so strong as in previous years, being without Northants 2s spinner Laurence Perry, and with Tim Schneider restricted to officiating. Pete Deal and Vic Kandampully made a solid start with a half century opening stand before Deal was bowled by the pacey Martin. This brought Ben Rose to the crease, and the score rocketed along at better than a run a ball, mainly due to a succession of 6s from Rose. Nomads 150/2 in the 24th over. Naman Paropkari took up the cudgels and shrugged off the loss of Rose for 71 to become the third Nomad to pass fifty, before being run out in the closing stages for 51.The innings was declared closed at 265/7 declared, in 43 overs. Gaieties would have around 45-46 overs to chase.
With the ball, Alex Jorgensen (2/25) made early breakthroughs courtesy of sharp catching in the cordon from Deal and Kandampully, and when Sam Denlay cleaned up Waddington with a nipbacker, Gaieties were in trouble at 29/3, although their opening bat Waring was still going strong. Chris Page (2/35) was brought on to tempt the Gaieties batsmen, and had both Dutta and Choueiri caught at short mid-wicket, much to the vocal disgust of Dutta! A succession of hard hit aerial shots from Waring moved the scoreboard along, but also resulted in Waring being dropped at cow corner by an over-casual Jorgensen. Much to the vocal disgust of Chris Page!
At the start of the last hour, Gaieties had managed only 102/5 from 25 overs. Hassan Khokhar (2/37) eventually dismissed Waring for a hard hitting 70, but only managed one other wicket. The match ended with fielders clustered around the bat as Gaieties went into dead-bat mode. But, on an even and placid Rectory Field wicket, it proved difficult to dismiss the tail, despite the efforts of Shaam Chakravarty hurtling in off his long run. Gaieties hung on for the draw at 158/7, from 45 overs bowled.
Nomads lingered on the Blackheath patio in the late June sunshine, with jugs of beer proving the perfect refreshment after a long afternoon.
