Nomads prevail despite fuel crisis N omads avenged last season’s resounding loss by defeating Leigh comfortably in what was for many of the XI their final match of the 2021 season.
The game took place in the midst of an escalating fuel crisis; fortunately, all but one of the Nomads party had sufficient petrol to reach Leigh’s rural ground, which boasts excellent views of the North Downs and was a picture in warm September sunshine.
A 35-over a side game was agreed upon, with Nomads asked to field first. Sajjad Shawl, despite a calf injury which forced him to shorten his run-up, was immaculate in his line-and-length and caused many problems for the home side’s openers. At the other end, Dev Shah took a wicket with his first delivery, well caught down the leg-side by keeper Tom Wilkins.
However, it was not until 14-year-old Alfie Gardner came on that wickets began to fall regularly. Coming off a season for Beddington where his accurate medium pace accounted for over 50 opposition batsmen, Alfie claimed 3 quick wickets to reduce Leigh to 68-4, with the top four all back in the hutch.
Chris Page was introduced at the bottom end and despite being struck for some lusty blows on the small ground, used his guile to snare 3 victims of his own. Captain Ben Butcher picked up 2 wickets as Leigh’s lower order attempted to increase the run rate, and the returning Shah completed the innings by clean bowling Leigh’s number 11.
Nomads were pleased to bowl Leigh our for 143 on what is definitively a “chasing” ground. The youthful XI was lively in the field and hands were generally safe. With tea still a BYO affair, most Nomads tucked into their supermarket meal deals but Alfie escalated matters and ordered fish-and-chips from the nearby country pub, which he tucked into with customary relish in the Leigh pavilion.
Leigh opened the bowling with the occasionally dangerous Kathirbelu, who quickly accounted for debutant (and last-minute call up) Harry Low. He went on to take the wickets of Harry Gardner and Wilkins, and Nomads were glad to see his 7 overs bowled straight through. By the time his spell ended, Middlesex 50+ captain Pawan Malik was finding the boundary with regularity, but his dismissal left Nomads at 60-4, very similar to the position the home side were in at the same stage.
It was here, however, that Ben Ralphs & James Hamilton came together. They took advantage of the friendlier change bowling to find the boundary frequently and ran well between the wickets. By the time Ralphs was dismissed, victory was virtually secured, with the final flourish provided by Shah, who struck a couple of lusty blows. Hamilton ended unbeaten on 40, an excellent innings showing how reliable the Harefield all-rounder has become with the willow.
The Nomads took advantage of the clement weather to enjoy some beers in the evening sunshine before wending their way home, or at least to the nearest petrol station. Previous Matches
