Gaieties Late collapse gives Nomads unexpected victory.
Both clubs had suffered drop outs so were not quite the sides preferred. In addition Nomads Alex Hales had a travelling mishap and arrived towards the end of the Nomads innings. It was another fine day and when Victor won the toss he had no hesitation in determining to bat. Last year the two Nomads opening bats slaughtered the Gaieties bowling setting up a victory in 33 overs. Sadly the same two batsmen made a mere eight runs between them this time including a first ball duck for Sanjay Beri.
The Nomads innings was sustained by a fine fifty from Abhinav and another well grafted fifty from Stu It was unfortunate that neither went on to a big score. Fayaz Ahmed with the tail took the score to 198 whereupon advancing up the wicket following a straight drive he was run out by the bowler and he was on 49. The Nomads innings ended on 211 off 47.3 overs. For Gaieties Angus Grenslees took 6-61 from 19 overs plus a run out and evergreen Matt Burton 3-46.
Unfortunately our Tea had been consumed by the Ladies playing on the second ground and their supporters although they had booked no Tea! Thus a dash to a nearby Supermarket produced a load of sandwiches and liquid Tea was produced in the bar kitchen. This mild chaos took time so the 20 overs was pushed later to give Gaieties at least 44 overs in reply.
In reply Gaieties openers did their best to replicate Nomads last year’s start and indeed added 109 for the first wicket despite a speedy spell from Oxford Blue Will Marriage who then quickly removed number 3 Jamie Elliott,2-127 off 22.3. Nomads looked decidedly feeble in the field with several sluggish movers.
Shomit Dutta joined Dan Petrides and these two seemed to be steadily taking Gaieties to victory. Sadly for him Dan mishit a rare long hop from Fayaz Ahmed straight to Vic who grabbed the chance with some joy. Dan had fallen 3 short of a deserved century,3-159. Shomit departed to leg spinner Kishan,4-173 off 36 overs whereupon although under no pressure run rate wise Gaieties collapsed losing six wickets for a paltry 25 runs. Three Gaieties recorded ducks! Vishal took 4 wickets and Kishan and Will one more each as the game was turned on its head.
Gaieties ended on 198 some 14 runs short of victory. Another close win for Nomads, the 29th of the season with some good catches. Vishal bowled 4-47 and Will Marriage finished with 3-75 off 17.1 overs.
In response to the lack of Tea Beaconsfield laid on a BBQ post match which was gratefully consumed by both sides.
In times past there was quite a cross between Nomads and Gaieties. Of this Gaieties eleven three had played for Nomads. We were also pleased to have visit the game and umpire for a while former Gaieties chair Roger Davidson who also played for Nomads.
This is only the second time Nomads have beaten Gaieties in successive contests.! Ossie Gooding and Charlton Lamb may have been pleased with this but Harold Pinter emphatically not!
